Bottled. Amber coloured. Unclear. Dense light brown head. Yeast, spice, fruits and alcohol in the aroma. Flavour of light liqourice, spice, sweetness, ripe fruits and light citrus. Yeast notable. Medium to full bodied. A bit dry. Sweet and fruits end with a citric touch. Is quite warming, but alcohol is well hidden.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 mgumby10 (1856) - Jupiter, Florida, USA - JUN 24, 2007
Pours a slighty cloudy reddish brown with a big, fluffy off tan head. Smells mildy sweet, some dark fruits, berries, and candy sugar. The taste really finishes quick I noticed right away. A little bit sweet, very malty, some light touches of cinnamon and fruits. Decent, but I wish the finish were a bit longer. Aftertaste leaves a light sweetness on the lips, but nothing too exciting here.

Bottle (330ml). Hazy chestnut pour, with an average fizzy-frothy beige lasting head. Aroma of brown sugar malt, sweet spices, bready yeast - really nice sweet BSA. Taste - like aroma, some molasses, a slight iron tang to it, the alcohol is well-buried, and there is a little yeast/floral hop bitterness in the finish. Average body, nicely carbonated, malt/spice aftertaste with a hint of the coriander in the finish. Just another fine, restrained BSA. I love ’em.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 JoeMcPhee (6835) - Toronto, ON, Ontario, CANADA - JUN 15, 2007
33 cl bottle. Deep ruddy-garnet colour. Intensely sweet aroma, showing dark crystal malts, caramel, toast and a heavy sweet plum/raisiny character. Figgy aroma with a solid dose of yeasty spice and a rye-like character as well. Fruity ester (cherry and blackberry) mixed with clove and coriander give the overall quality of a baked pudding. Silky smotth mouthfeel that is enhanced by the rich malty flavour and soft sweet fruitiness of this brew. Light vanilla and vineousness with a lingering spicy finish. As it warms it gets a little bit boozy, but it’s still a fine brew.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 FlacoAlto (3086) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - JUN 13, 2007
Sampled May 2007
Pours with a fairly tightly beaded, frothy, textured, tan head that leaves a nice lacing pattern on the sides of the glass as it slowly subsides. The beer is an almost brilliantly clear, deep cranberry color. The aroma smells of soft, earthy, citrus-like coriander, which is a mix of blood oranges, a textured-chewy spice character and notes of clove.
The beer is quite thick, which is certainly not unexpected give this beers strength. It is sweet, but definitely sweet from a healthy, chewy amount of malt. Notes of caramel intermingle with the more dominant, concentrated fruit character of prunes and figs. The taste is also quite spicy, with a earthy backdrop of coriander as well as a spicy finish reminiscent a bit as ginger (perhaps a combination of the carbonation and the grains of paradise). A hint of sweet citrus is here as well. The beer has quite a creamy texture to it; all of the malt allows the beer to stick to the palate.
This is definitely a sipping brew and there is enough chewy, fruity malt character to offset the spice-character quite nicely. The coriander helps to dry this beer out, which is certainly nice as it might be too sweet without something like this.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Ibrew2or3 (4699) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - JUN 11, 2007
UPDATED: MAY 28, 2010 Brew courtesy of Degarth.
Pours muddy murky nearly brackish brown with thin off white head. It has a big sweet sweet fruity aroma of dates and prunes as well as spices like cinnamon and coriander and some yeast too. The flavor is smooth with bready fruitiness like Fig Newtons soaking in a bath of booze. But the fruit seems to really spike with way more oomph than a standard Fig Newton. It ends both dry and somewhat hot from the big ABV.
A bit of age really makes this yummy for me and my tastes. The rating booms up from 3.3 to 3.9.
