freekyp (900), Thomasville, North Carolina, USA Feb 7, 2005 Cloudy maize with an ample off-white head. This beer smelled like a foot that had been trampling moldy apricots. The mustard flavor is only slightly apparent and doesn’t get in the way of an otherwise decent, but not thrilling, Beligian golden ale. Not worth a second visit. argo0 (6842), Washington DC, USA Jan 19, 2005 Cloudy amber body with small off-white head. Aroma is sweet, raspberry, orange, some candi sugar -- evokes Kool Aid in its sweet fruitiness. Taste is medium sweet, herbal hop, light grassy, honey, fruity. Mustard shows up a bit in the swallow, but only there. Watery, light-medium body, light acidity. Alcohol is well hidden. heemer77 (4294), Savannah, Missouri, USA Jan 11, 2005 A dark cloudy copper and brown coloring. The head is huge and white. The aroma has tart lemons with some sweat socks. The taste reminds me of flat Sprite. Also has notes of lemons and some orange peels. A slightly sour brew that is interesting. I coudn’t pull out the mustard seed notes. Crockett (904), Steelback County, Ontario, Canada Dec 11, 2004 Lots of sediment left in the bottle. Pours hazy orange with a sprity short white head. Lemony, spiced, toasty honey aroma. Tangerine and pepper. Not nearly as much mustard as I had expected. More of a dijon or Keen’s flavour than strictly just mustard seeds. Hot. Caramel and sweet spicey apple cider. Different and fun. MrRomero (1934), Nolanville, Texas, USA Dec 3, 2004 Updated: Dec 7, 2004Delirium Cafe, Brussels, Dec 2004: Poured orange with a medium white dissipating head. Hoppy aroma with a bit of malt. Has mostly a fruity taste and more sweet than I anticipated. I can only detect orange and a hint of strawberry maybe. No mustard. Nice. Vac (2389), San Diego, California, USA Nov 29, 2004 This brew pours with a deep amber-orange body topped by a medium thick head with a good amount of lacing. The aroma is slightly sweet yet slightly bitter and spicy with a slight lemon note and a touch of malt. The flavor is slightly sweet and slightly citrusy with a touch of spice and a hint of mustard. Not all that great. Medium bodied, smooth and a touch dry. whaleman (2171), North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 28, 2004 Bottle contains nearly a 1/4 inch of murky sediment at the bottom. Pours a deep golden body with abundant carbonation and a loose fizzy head that quickly vanished. Nose of biscuits, mustard, and grass. After sniffing this for a while, a burning sensation develops in the nasal muscosa from the "mustard gas". Finding this aroma in a beer would scare the crap out of me if I didn’t know that it contained mustard seed. Citrusy esters come through in the flavor and lead to some mild mustard spice. Phenols are prominent and slightly, but not overly, detracting. Solid Munich malt character helps tie the flavors together and make this distinct and enjoyable rather than funky and disjointed. However the aftertaste suggests lemon tea. Medium-light body, also with a tea-like quality. Uniqueness makes this hard to evaluate, but it is fun and interesting. Thanks Sean (igel) for the spontaneous beer donation. Cornfield (4892), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA Nov 27, 2004 The concept of an ale brewed with mustard seeds sounds like something that my buddies & I would come up with during a night of heavy beer "sampling." (Remember, if anyone comes out with a gherkin beer, we had the idea first!) This poured a hazy golden color with a modest, fizzy white head. The aroma is slightly sour with some spicy notes. It’s medium-bodied, lightly carbonated, with tastes of oranges, sweet/sour candy, and a nice doughy malt. The finish is dry, a birt tart, and finally gives you a hint of mustard flavoring. This is worth another try.
