Cletus (5002), Connecticut, USA Nov 20, 2004 Excellent dark blonde ale with some hints of mustard peaking through. I have a few more of these that I’m looking forward to savoring around the holidays. Definitely worth a try for anyone into blonde ales or spiced ales. beermatrix (1497), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA Nov 5, 2004 Color is a lovely hazen murky orangy gold with a small fluffy froth of cream on top and the lacing is coated in smooth, silky fine sheeting.
Aroma is convincingly spicy and dry with a really nice, yet strangely appetizing bready, cracker thing. Reminds me of those vegetable crackers. Its not quite mustard smelling but does carry over somekind of lemony/oniony/pickle/cheesy characteristics.
Flavors are dry with a lemony twist and slight notions of mustard spice. Good bready malt backing thats dry and sweet and entertains some interesting finishing qualities where some cloying mixes with dry acidic sourness. Seemingly Golden ale like but yet not.
Feel is just shy of medium body with an overall dry character mixing with some sour acidic stuff, kinda like a golden ale and small amounts of lambic-like drops thrown in. Very interesting concoction, one to put on the must try list if you want something out of the ordinary. tiggmtl (4307), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Nov 3, 2004 Sweet, spicy, fruity and musty notes to the aroma. Hazy orange-tan with thin white head that recedes to cover. Earthy sweet orange flavour is somewhat stale and musty. Lightly prickling carbonation but somewhat thin in the mouth. Bottle sampled with MartinT, muzzlehatch and Rastacouere. muzzlehatch (4427), Burlington, Vermont, USA Nov 2, 2004 Biere de Garde and Various Oddments tasting, #13, with MartinT, Rastacouere and tiggmtl. Small bottle. Intriguing earthy nose, dull light orange color..a bit of mustard spiciness on the tongue, but really not terribly interesting; slightly artificial. MartinT (5030), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Nov 1, 2004 Strange yet bland aroma of earthy oranges and, maybe, in the distance, mustard...Medium carbonation suggests a few sweet fruit flavors but these are bothered by this watery death clinging on to them all of the way...Like cactus water, this can be refreshing I guess in hot temperatures, but one would need to be stranded and in trouble to revisit this desertic experience... Rastacouere (5551), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Oct 31, 2004 Murky amber, light off-white head is sticky enough. Weird leather aroma, grainy, leafy, very yeasty. Lightly citric and rather harsh. Not so tasty in mouth, mostly tart with weird flavours seemingly off, approaching onions, frensh fries.. plastic… Very weird, mustardy bitterness, short aftertaste, fortunately. Rather high carbonation, lifeless mouthfeel. jtw (942), farmington, Michigan, USA Oct 17, 2004 pale cloudy amber. smells like a belgian, mustard is barely detectable. doesn’t really seem like mustard belongs in a beer, but what the hell, it’s worth a shot. has typical belgian characteristics, yeast, grapes, alcohol, and there is only a hint of spicy mustard in the finish. sour/tart finish. too thin to be a good belgian, and not enough mustard to be a spice/herb/vegetable beer. try it, but just once. hopdog (5527), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 14, 2004 Poured a medium to dark cloudy amber with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of yeast and mustard). I can taste the mustard as well. Grapes in the taste as well. Thinner, watery body. My first ’Mustad Ale’ - are there that many out there and do I want to try more?
