Pretty standard Asian lager, not much but a sweetish taste. Tasted it, rated it...enough.

April 25th, 2012 - A regular shopping trip one day turned into an outing to the local Taiwanese market. It’s a well lit, slightly damp cornucopia of exceedingly fresh fish, vibrant greens and vegetables and all kinds of fun Taiwanese snacks, spices and sippable goodies. Somewhere near the check out lane I spotted Taiwan’s eponymous beer: Taiwan beer. For a buck a bottle I couldn’t decline the opportunity to try the beer that represents the whole of an island. Sadly, I don’t think the beer does justice to the social and economic richness of its homeland. It’s basically a terrible pale lager with a high fructose corn syrup laden cereal smell, pale and wan flavor and more terrible corn syrup flavors in the taste. This beer is, frankly, terrible and a diplomatic disaster.

Bottled. Pale golden coloured. Very weak aroma. Weak and quite sweet flavour. Watery.

Bottle from Kenwood Liquor. You know, scientists now say Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons, has an icy surface 10 miles thick, covering an ocean 100 miles deep, which could have the ingredients necessary for life. And I’ll bet they make better beer than this. Despite the brown bottle, it’s got a skunky smell. Perhaps I should consider it doesn’t have a date and probably sat on the shelf for months, but I’m feeling too ornery. Hazy straw color, a layer of fizz. Taste is mostly of adjuncts, some rubbing alcohol, and a little bitterness. I feel like I’m done with it now, but there’s half a bottle to go.

Hellgelb mit minimaler Schaumkrone. Geruch leicht malzig, sonst aromenlos. Geschmack extrem wässrig malzig.

Jan 2007: from BA. Green bottle, 600ml, claiming to be a Gold Medal Beer, whoever voted for this beer was got at! Paler than a pale thing, on international pale day, this lager looked like Euro fizz, but even paler, light, no very light, almost a see through watery, urine after a heavy day of drinking Bitburger (you must be pissed if you think I’ve done that). Taste-less, aroma-less, mouthfeel-less, drinkable-less etc, etc. If I am stuck in an Island with a dead bloke and a crate of this beer, I would drink rain water before I would open a bottle of Taiwan Beer.

This may be the first beer that I am semi-hesitant to drink, but the can is so awesome looking, I have to give it a try. 11oz can. Rice lusted as an ingredient. Awesome. Pours a clear gold color with a white head. Aromas of rice and failed attempts at democracy. Blood on the streets. Rice on the tongue. Sweet taste with an industrial finish. Below minimum wage sweat shop workers. Tears. Failure. Shattered dreams. Apathy. Fuck.

330 ml can as “Classic Taiwan Beer” bought at CR Vanguard in Nathan Road, Yau Ma Tei.

Piss pale golden yellow colour; Half finger head and soapy white foam which fades in 30 seconds; Small sticky lacing with notable small carbonation; Fairly pungent smell of malt, with rice, light syrup, hint of floral, bread and very light grass; Very light sweet taste of thin malt, with heavy metallic, strong rice, strong wet cardboard, sourness, band aid, rubbing alcohol, faint lemon, bitter hops and grass; Light body, watery palate; Mouth feel is fouled and very harsh - thin malt to start, infected sourness, awfully strong metallic and wet cardboard, matched by band aid and fusel - Fuck!... Hoppiness is floral hint and faint grass nose, thin lemon and grass in taste. Bitterness is notable for a Pale, in a screwed up light bitter finish; Wet after taste, very harsh to mouth.

Comments: This is in a can and it’s fouled and infected. Metal, band-aid, fusel, wet paper and sourness, all hell breaks lose. An instant Classic drain pours. Never again!

Skunky aroma hint of yeast, honey coloured no head, nutty taste not very pleasant. An oily palate that redeems itself by not lasting too long.
