We love this beer here at the brewery, and think you will have one of those “I’ve never-tasted-a-beer-like-that” kind of moments when you try it!

What we really like about this beer is the smoothness that brewing with cream sugar brings to the palate. This smoothness balances out the copious quantities of roasted barley used in the brewing process to create a rich, complex, and delicious beer. If you have not been a stout drinker in the past, give this beer a try. It might just change your mind about how dark beers should taste. It tastes so rich, but is surprisingly easy to drink!

UPDATED: APR 27, 2012 On tap. Aroma chocolate and coffee. Dark brown with frothy tan head. Tastes sweet with hints of chocolate and coffee. My favorite Tallgrass beer.

Very dark, almost completely black and opaque. Good head that dissipated and left a thin film on top. Lacing that creeps back down the glass. Smells of slightly sweet bitter roasted malts with a touch of coffee. Tastes much like the smell, but with some dark chocolate character that adds nicely to the dark roasted malts, coffee, minimal hops. It’s sweet, although not especially so for the style. This adds a nice dimension as it’s a bit different than what I expected. It’s a very flavorful beer. Feels quite thick and full bodied going in, but slightly watery when you swallow. Slightly slick on the tongue, with a very pleasant lingering sweet aftertaste. Very nice and highly drinkable. The moderate ABV makes it easy to drink while the delicious but not overpowering flavor makes me want to have this one again. Value: 6.85 for four 16 oz cans. A good deal.

Bottle. Drinkable, but a tad too sweet. I was tired of it before I finished my first glass. This is the beer for soda drinkers or for those afraid of stouts.

Mahogony trimmed black body beneath a fading 1.5" light khaki head leaving flat dense shallow lace all around

Aroma of creamy lactic blending caramel notes and pleasant chocolate cake with a controlled dark chocolate-coffee influence introducing subtle bitter nuance on a light-medium, mildly carbonated body finishing with hints of dark fruit, and a touch of vanilla, smooth chocolate on the dark side of sweet rounding out, solid session

16oz can at 45º into 16.5oz Stölze Berlin

Pint can to a tulip. The beer pours a super dark brown with a thick tan head that leaves little lacing. Right off the bad I can smell sweet cream, oats, and cocoa. This beer is very fragrant and smells awesome. Taste is creamy chocolate and cocoa up front. It picks up roasted coffee flavors as well as roasted barley and oats. Mouthfeel is somewhat thin but it fits this beer well. It remains very creamy and the flavors linger in your mouth a while. Very nice.

Pours dark mahogany with a thick tan head. Aroma is coffee and oats. Taste is nice and full but dissipates quickly. There butting on the backend...it’s just gone.

Bottled. Pours black with a medium brown head. Smells of coffee, oatmeal and chocolate. Flavors of burnt/toasted malt, chocolate and coffee. Not as sweet as i was expecting. Finished strong with a lingering taste of mocha.

Very dark pour with a medium sized tan head. Smell is coffee, chocolate, and maybe a little bit of vanilla and some brown sugar? molasses. Smooth and easy drinking stout with just the right amount of sweetness, not overbearing. Heavy lacing on my glass throughout the beer. Glad to have this stout around Iowa.

Dark brown pour, quickly fading off-white head with some nice lacing on the glass. Interesting aroma. Roast, brown rice (not in a bad way, reminds me of some brands of Japanese tea that have brown rice added), a little chocolate. Taste is very similar. The roast/brown rice flavors dominate, and there is a nice, sweet, drawn out finish. Mouthfeel is subpar for an oatmeal stout, but not bad. Nice beer, and relatively unique in my view.

Tap at stubs. Dark with some red highlights, no head but decent lacing. Nose is mostly smoke, with some wood, some toffee malt notes. Taste is meh...some light smoke on the end, some odd fruit in the middle, a bit of dark malt throughout. Much too watery. Not a great beer.
