So. my first thought is that Iím going to compare Ethos IPA to my local legend Surly Furious. Both come in 16oz cans. Price point between the two is negligible. Both have pretty high IBUs while maintaining a reasonable ABV. Surly: 99/6.2% Ethos 110/6.7% That is about as far as the comparison goes. Ethos could be described as decent to good...Surly is world class. First and foremost Ethos is a hop bomb. There is no pretense of balance here. West Coast my ass, there are hopheads out there in the heartland. On the lighter side of the classic IPA amber color with a light, thin white head. The aroma stands tall with dank earthy, tropical fruit and apricot hop notes. Initial tasting provides lots of grapefruit, and citrus tang but falls apart fairly quickly. The carbonation is light. Surprisingly at 110 IBUs the bitterness is not as assertive as one would expect. The mouthfeel could best be described as thin and lacking depth. While tasty, this is very much one note and not nearly as refreshing as I had hoped. This did get better as it warmed a bit, a little more sweetness came through but this brew still lacked "completeness" In the crowded world of IPAs this falls into the pedestrian side of the equation.

Hazy, copper-gold pour with a frothy, white head. It has pleasant citrus hop aroma. The light body has a slightly crisp texture and lively carbonation. The taste is bittersweet with a balanced, mildly dry finish.

Pours copper / orange with a large off-white head. The aroma has tropical fruit, pine, earth, toasty malt, caramel, mild sweetness and a great balance to everything. It has a medium clean body thatís a touch rough and has fairly soft carbonation. The flavor starts with pine, grapefruit, tropical fruit, caramel, spice and hints of cotton candy. The finish is resiny, grassy, piny and spicy. Quite dry. Great IPA.

Pint at ITAP Soulard. This beer was clear and coppery. Just a little off white foam. Not a really big aroma. Some fairly complex fruit. This beer begins with malts leading. They are caramel but more than that and are quite nice. Then those complex fruits enter and are tropical. Just a little grapefruit is next. The finish was then more dry with a different hop. It was a lot of fun taking this through a few temperature changes. A very well brewed beer. One that is tasty enough for everybody but also challenging for those who like to find different flavors.

This can was sent to me courtesy of Doran in Missouri in a trade. It poured an orange color with a beige head and excellent lacing. Very attractive. Good start. The nose is citrus and pine with passion fruit. Resin mouthfeel and a medium to full body. The flavor screams hops which ride on a nice caramel malt backbone. The finish is dry and bitter. This is is right up there with the better west coast IPAs. Very enjoyable.

16 oz can. I am not a fan of IPAs. If you like them you would probably like this one. It tastes like all of the other "great" IPAs Iíve had.

Poured from can, pours a bright orange with a white head and tons of lacing in the glass, the aroma is of juicy citrus hops with a lot of tropical fruit mixed in, right up there with the big boys from out West, the flavor is dialed down more than those, but still packs some wet fresh hops and some fruit, a little bit of garlic in the finish, but thatís kind of expected with this citrusy of an ipa, not bad at all.

Amber - orange color. Modest head. Aroma slightly sweet and hoppy. Taste is well balanced with a slight citrus finish. A fine example of a west coast IPA.

Can. BB 2.12.14. Pours amber - nice lacing. Nose has loads of fresh floral notes and mild pine resin backed by caramel malt aroma. Tastes creamy with good malt structure, very pronounced hop profile throughout - sticky resiny notes of mangos and pineapples, some passionfruit and mild piney flavors - pleasant fruity/floral bitterness coats the mouth and lingers for a long, long time. This was apparently a very fresh sample and it was extremely good- even rivaling some top west coast ipas.

In short: A toasted golden IPA with an original fruity character. Good.
How: Can, 1 Pint, consumed fresh soon after purchase from a Kansas store.
The look: Clear golden-orange body topped by a small white head leaving lots of lacings on the glass.
In long: Nose is fruity hops but not of the usual citrusy kind, here I got melons, apricots, exotic fruits, more... Taste has a strong toasted character, some caramel, lots of melons, bitter green grass, piney notes, gooseberries. Bitterness intensity in the medium range. Pleasant mouthfeel with a medium carbonation and a body that is more chewy than expected from a filtered IPA. Easy drinking IPA with its own personality. Good beer. I had to google what Ethos means, itís a greek word with a deep meaning or something, anyway whatís important is my google recent search history now has an entry Iím not ashamed of.
