3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle, shared at RBAG 2014 by Derek I believe. Muddy brown body, effervescent light brown head. Raisins, dark sugary fruits, lightly phenolic. More toward an abbey dubbel style. Odd, but intriguing.

Plum, citrus, rose, and earth. Dark brown with a thin, creamy off white head. Dark brown, a little sludgy, thin off white head. Taste is plum, mace, and some nutmeg. I love Japan!

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle - Perfumy, flowery and a nice herbal. Jet black with a rich beige head. Light malts, plum, fig and flowery. An odd beer for sure.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Black saison! Draft at Ushitora in Tokyo. Coffee and caramel and cream notes in aroma and taste. Nice dry palate of the saison, but metallic and wineous finish. Interesting combo, but falls a bit flat.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Cask ale version
Aroma: coffee, bitter chocolate, peach
Flavor: bitter sweet coffee, pear, turned to mildly sweet pear and red berry on the mid-palate, bitter chocolate and lasting coffee on the finish
Comment: the taste shifts from an initial bitterness to a moderate sweetness and then back to a bitterness on the finish. At the same time, I perceived the body’ as going from light to medium to light.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from Tanakaya. Dark brown colour, big bubbly golden head. Aroma is touch of soy sauce, herbs, booze, roasty malt, slight floral/perfumey smell. Taste is very nice. Bit of chocolate, some savoury elements, herbs, bit plummy. Sweet and delicious.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from Tanakaya, tasted 06/19/2012. Black pour, huge dense fine-bubbled fluffy head, sticks around for quite a while. Aroma has fruity saison yeast, light notes of chocolate, roasted malts and rice grains, somewhat grassy citrus character in the end. Taste opens with rich chocolate and roasted malt, almost porter-like, becomes sweeter and fruity with the Belgian yeast, mild bitterness. Medium to full palate, silky carbonation. This was a surprise, quite lovely, and will definitely seek out more from this brewery when I get the chance.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Gave this 7 months to mature and I think it did wonders for the beer. Rich, inviting but very drinkable. Some chocolate, minerals, berries and a soft hop finish - quite dry. A little like a sake/saison hybrid in many ways. Very refined. Top shelf from the best in Japan.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Sampled at RBSG Grand Rapids. Deep black-brown pour. The nose is soft and quite spicy. A kiss of light raisin and soft toasted dark malts. Spicy and chewy with a lingering light spicy/citrusy finish.

3.9 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
75cl bottle brought back to the UK from Japan and sampled after settling for 8 weeks. Fabulously intense beery aroma liberated by having lttle head; rich brown character like squeezed tea bag only with a mix of caramel and stewed grain, spoiled only by a bit too much ricy backtaste. I get the desire to impose Japanese-ness by using sake rice - I just don’t like the tastes it brings.
