Black unsweetened cocoa without bitterness. Light roast. This beer is very pleasant without the alcohol typically associated with imperials.

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours black with a thick deep tan head. Aroma is molasses & coffee. Taste is smooth, creamy and sweet with malts and coffee becoming distinct in the mid. Hoppy citrus bitterness dances with the coffee for a long and bitter finish.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap @ Tampa Bay Brewing. Very dark brown, almost black in color, with some khaki foam. Kind of on the sweet side with a bunch of chocolate, caramel, and molasses. Moderate roasted malt character and a decent bit of coffee, at least. There is a slightly bitter, ashy note to the finish, but it does work fine enough with the sweetness of the burnt sugars, chocolate, and hints of dark fruit.

Iron Rat Imperial Stout [10%]
On tap at the brewpub.
Pours dark brown, essentially black, with a good tan head. Decent lacing,
Aroma: faint and mild for style, even after some warming. Smokey, dark roasted grains.
Flavor: Ample dark roasted grains with some burnt toast and char. More bittering hops than expected. Some sweetness too leaving a mild bitterness overall.
Feel: smooth and full, with only some of the alcohol showing.
O: a good RIS with well-hidden alcohol.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Fluted snifter pour with khaki almost two under head. Nose is loads of coffee and roasted malt. Quite toasty and dark. Flavor follows, bitter coffee notes and some chocolates, again, more bitter. Sharp and enjoyable.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Sample at the brewpub. Dark brownish-black color with a medium foamy tan head that diminishes steadily. Partial rings of lacing. Roast malt, coffee and hops in the nose. Medium to full body with a roasty malt and coffee character, plus some earthy hops in the background. The finish is sweet and creamy with a malt and cocoa aftertaste. Decent overall.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Enjoyed a tulip glass of this beer on tap at the brewpub in Ybor. The beer had a full black color with rising dark bubbles on the outside and a large, dark, tan, creamy-foamy head with very good retention, and excellent cling and lacing. Its aroma had roasty chocolate and coffee tones along with lighter toffee and caramel notes and touches of earth and molasses. It had a semi-sweet coffee flavor with a blend of chocolate and was also fairly bitter with earthy and grainy flavors. The beer was fairly thick, wet, and velvety, with low-average carbonation, a dry finish, and a presence of alcohol.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Big roasty stout that actually comes up a little thin. Has a good pour w/ nice lacing. It’s kind of a 1 trick pony & lacks a little bit of depth. Nevertheless, it’s a solid beer & worth a try for the avid stout fan!
