kiefdog (390), Tampa, Florida, USA Apr 13, 2008 On tap at brewery on 4/5/08. Pours a dark brown to black with a creamy white head. Aroma: grain, chocolate, coffee. Tastes the same with slightly bitter, chocolate, coffee finish. BBB63 (3767), La Porte, Indiana, USA Mar 24, 2008 Tap at brewery: Nearly opaque with a rocky tan head and good lace. The aroma has notes of charred and chocolate malts, anise and plum, light grassy esters, quite weak. The taste is like a chocolate shake with burnt malts in reserve. Mild coffee and dark fruits noted as well. The mouth feel is creamy and soft, medium-bodied and astringent. A sub-par imperial, more like a regular old sweet stout IMO, disappointing. decaturstevo (1181), decatur, Tennessee, USA Feb 16, 2008 At TBBC. An almost black pour with deep creamy brown head and lace. Nose of toasted chocolate malt. Very good chocolate flavor with more of a bitter finish than I would have expected. Good mouthfeel and carbonation. Just a tick thin. A good stout with a dry finish with a pretty hard bitter that hangs. Well done. Quake1028 (627), Tampa, Florida, USA Jan 30, 2008 Draught at the brewpub. Black as night pour, 2 finger thick bubbly brown head. Incredible retention as well. Only thing keeping this from a 5 is the lack of lacing. Nose is chocolate malts, coffee grounds, dark fruity esters, some nice roasted bits and vanilla beans. Doesn’t smell hot at all, and it shouldn’t at this relatively low ABV for the style. Fore is more chocolate, tons of roast, caramel, vanilla and coffee. Back of the throat brings more of the same, the sweetness builds over time but never becomes overpowering. Medium bodied, wish it had a bit more heft and chewiness to it. Finish is chalky, medium length and in turns roasty and sweet. A bit disappointed in this one after the back to back greatness of the Mad Hopper and the Jack the Quaffer, but this is still a really good beer. hophead75 (1648), Boonton, New Jersey, USA Jan 12, 2008 sampled at the brewpub. Opaque black in color with a deep brown head. Aroma is alot of roast and chocolate, don’t get much more than that. Taste is heavily roasted with alot of chocolate, and some molasses sneaking in creating a pleasant bittersweet character. pretty full bodied, almost too much roast in this. Pretty straightforward- not too complex but enjoyable. not much alcohol detected.
