COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally brewed by the monks of St. Francis of Paula (Paulaner Brewery today) as “liquid bread” for the fast during Lent, and dedicated to the Savior, or “Salvator” in German. It is very smooth, dark, rich, and malty. (Dopplebock comes in around 7.2%-8% abv.)

On tap. Pours with a slightly hazed amber brown body (odd), with a large and lasting tan head. Aromas are lightly leathery, even some smoke (odd again), dark fruits, raisins, dry nuts, malty, bready, munich and some light melanoidins. Flavors are malty, bready, raisiny, caramelized. Dark fruits. Medium bitter balances. Medium bubbles, dry, light smoke note in the finish.

The pour is copper in color with a creamy off-white head.  Not too much of an aroma to this one.  It’s sweet with caramel and toffee, maybe a little bit of toasted malt.  The sweet caramel is a bit creamy, which is nice.  Some toasted bread and toffee.  Sort of one dimensional, but good.

On tap at Taps. Color was dark, reddish brown. Aroma of dark fruit, banana, sweet malt and must. Flavor was a bit strange. Only a slight sweetness. Flavor of earthy, caramel, and fruit. Some sweet malt and toffee.

Tasted at brewery. Mohogany color; nice, lasting head. Aroma and taste of rich, sweet, full body with roasted malts, molassas, caramel, toffee, spices. I was told 7.6%. Decent but more sweet than complex like a Salvator.

I was looking forward to this one and I have to say I’m a little disappointed.Dark brown pour. Flavor is a sweet and malty with some kind of spicy (clove/nutmeg) notes. The abv is well hidden and there is a slight hop bite near the finish.
