3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Blairgus (1015) - California, USA - FEB 4, 2012
4 feb 2012, tap at Taps. Light but brown, clear, some bubbles. A tally reminds me of banoffee pie; banana comes out a bit more than toffee with some biscuits in the background. Thin/med body and a bit fizzy. Taste is a bit disappointing. Faint banoffee pie ale. Meh.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours with a hazed golden body with a white head and good lacing. Aroma is estery, banana, spicy, earthy, clove and black pepper. Flavors of phenols, clove, spicy, light diacetyl and a touch of DMS (light but there). Vanilla and rye. Creamy bubbles but decently dry.

A: The pour is an incredibly turbid orange color with a small white head that leaves nice lacing on the glass.
S: Quite a bit of spice on the nose, much like a hefeweizen with some rye in it. A decent amount of wheat and a lot of banana esters to go with it.
T: The flavor is pretty sweet with a lot of banana, and the same spiciness that the nose offered. The rye is there, but there’s a fair amount of clove flavor, too.
M: Seems to be maybe a touch watery on the palate, but the carbonation is decent enough.
D: Not bad, I guess, especially by Taps standards. I don’t know how "true to style" it is, but tasty enough.

On tap at Taps in Brea. Served in a contoured pint glass. Golden-to-amber in color, hazy, and with off-white head. Decent carbonation, perhaps low for style but adequate for a draft pour. Aromas recall the classic Bavarian Hefe, but with an angle toward the spicier, clovey side. Unexpectedly light and easy-drinking for a rye beer. Spicy, earthy rye malt flavor evident in the aftertaste, but isn’t a dominant presence throughout. Good beer, well-made, but a little boring for my taste

Poured a murky amber color with an off white head. Aroma of bubblegum, yeast, spice, fruit and bread. Flavor had rye, yeast, banana, bread and earth. Ok.

Not bad. I like my rye beers more like Founder’s Red & Black Rye - they just seem to have more meat to them whereas this came off like a standard ale. Notes of bread, grain, lemonpeel.
