UPDATED: SEP 28, 2014 500ml bottle (?, Vilnius) (5:4:5:3:10=2.7)
Deep copper, almost no head. Simple malt aroma. Minerally taste - chalky. Dry, a touch too minerally. Passable beer, but not exciting me.
Rerate: 500ml (Olu Volu, Tartu) (6:4:6:4:12=3.2)
Pours with a sweet cakey aroma, very malty, a little mashy in the glass, just a little hint of liver once or twice, but sweet raisiny cakeyness, and even kali/kvass-like aspects, dominate that. Nice dark copper, small tight beige head. Smooth palate, pleasant carbonation. Rich sweet taste, again a little raw and kvassy., but again has a little bit of liver in its graininess. Anna says it’s a little vegetal, but I’m not getting that. Feels a bit watery, this could be made a bit bigger, all the way to doppelbock levels. Much nicer this time. Useful rerate.

My Bottom Line:
Toasted and toffee malt flavors produce a simple but still compelling example of a Lithuanian Tamsus.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the deep amber.
-The flavor profile is balanced out by wooden hops and their light bitterness.
-This is very drinkable.
-The intensity and length of the toastiness is nowhere near that of Davra’s Varniuku, for example.

Bottle.

500 ml bottle. BB 3 III 2013. From Lithuania. Ačiū Tautvydas!
Hazy dark brown colour with a small to average sized light tan head. Malt, yeast, honey, diacetyl and bread in the aroma. The flavour is much easier. There’s malt, bread, mild yeast and mild diacetyl. Some sweetness too. Drinkable. Soft carbonation.

AMber coloured and hazy. Has a white head, diminishing. Aroma of light butter, sweetness too. Flavor is heavy sweet, more butter notes.

Tap. Dark brown with a huge, fine head. Nose of chocolate, raisins, and some yogurt. Rich malt falvor, grass, caramel, sour edge. Weird and not so nice.

larsga (6319) - Oslo, NORWAY - DEC 1, 2012
Medium beige head. Slightly hazy deep amber body. Earthy dusty strawy aroma with caramelly grainy notes. Dry-sweetish earthy roasty caramelly taste with dusty nougat notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, slightly hot, mealy mouthfeel. Dry dusty strawy roasty grain aftertaste with chocolatey earthy notes. Really nice and full of flavour. (0.5l bottle, from Bamb Alyne, Vilnius.)

In short: A darker Lithuanian beer offering a stack of toasted hay with a light farmhouse character. Highly drinkable
How: Bottle 500ml. Consumed fresh the day of purchase, split 4-way
The look: Almost clear dark-golden body topped by a small beige head
In long: Nose has plenty of very toasted hay (a recurring theme with many Lithuanian traditional breweries), some cookies and light rural farmhouse character. Taste is once again very toasted, a bit of caramel and toffee, some roasted wood. Overall low sweetness sensation. This one is an average just a slightly above average Lithuanian Tamsus but I really dig the dryness and the super-toasted character of those Lithuanian darker ales. Very sessionnable. Another good Lithuanian beer with only bad ratings except those from some of my friends from Montreal, you guys are alright, I’ll kill you last.

(Rating #4190)
