As pale “Kanapinis” received great popularity, the dark version of this beer was brewed as well. For brewing of the beer, hemp seeds and roasted malt is used which gives rich dark colour and, upon tasting, caramel savour with distinct hop bitterness unfolds.

Bottle 50 cl. Courtesy of Schroppfy. Pours a cloudy amber with a lacing off-white head. The nose has a little exotic fruit and dryish(!) caramel accents. Light body, again this interesting lactic tartness. Overripe fruitiness, rustic metallic notes with a dry finish. Again hardly any hops. Very far from what you’d normally associate with a Dunkel! 080911

50cl bottle got as a gift. Pours hazy caramel brown with an off-white head. Malty and caramelly aroma with mild fruity notes and hints of wet wood and vanilla. Medium sweet with caramel dominated flavour, light acidity and quite balanced bitterness. On the sweet side, but quite tasty and easy to drink.

UPDATED: SEP 28, 2014 500ml bottle (?, Vilnius) (5:4:5:3:10=2.7)
Deep copper, almost no head. Simple malt aroma. Minerally taste - chalky. Dry, a touch too minerally. Passable beer, but not exciting me.
Rerate: 500ml (Olu Volu, Tartu) (6:4:6:4:12=3.2)
Pours with a sweet cakey aroma, very malty, a little mashy in the glass, just a little hint of liver once or twice, but sweet raisiny cakeyness, and even kali/kvass-like aspects, dominate that. Nice dark copper, small tight beige head. Smooth palate, pleasant carbonation. Rich sweet taste, again a little raw and kvassy., but again has a little bit of liver in its graininess. Anna says it’s a little vegetal, but I’m not getting that. Feels a bit watery, this could be made a bit bigger, all the way to doppelbock levels. Much nicer this time. Useful rerate.

500ml bottle. Clear dark amber, almost copper color. Small size, beige head, stays. Caramel, grains, faint bready, faint grassy notes in aroma. Roast, dusty, bit dirty, sweet, almost kvass like burnt bread in taste. Spicy hop esters too. Soft carbonation. Sweet soft spicy body.

1L brown glass swing top bottle. Opaque light brown body, small head. Rustic Lithuanian aroma with a pleasant bready roast. Sweet nutty taste with lactic hints and more soft roast. Oily mouthfeel and a bit low carbonation. Finish has some harsh wooden/herbal hops. Quite nice beer until the finish which is a bit unrefined. Also, please consider using reasonably sized bottles.

2 litre bottle from Beers Of Europe.Dark Lithuanian beer sampled between the members of our small beer club. This beer poured with a small head and quickly produced aromas of malt and hay. These were evident in the taste also along with toffee and caramel.Citrus also came through on 3rd or 4th sip.Sour taste in there too but was nicely balanced by the toffee notes.Nice start to the days sample session.
