Bottle (sampled in Nagoya)
Very dark brown color, good steady beige head. Light dry toasted nose, hints of yeast. Light-bodied. Crisp. Toasted, slightly ashy dark maltyness. Finish has some minty hoppyness. Decent lager.

Nutty aroma, coffee beans, roasted malt, coffee finish. Surprisingly smooth dark lager, maybe a bit light for a schwarz but enjoyable.

Tap at Marciero. Dark brown colour, small thin golden head. Aroma is light cola, cocoa. Taste is lightly roasty, bit of caramel. Easy drinking.

TimE (3184) - Tokyo, JAPAN - MAY 3, 2010
Very nice rich aroma of dark Malts and caramel. Light, but rich mouth showing some deep dark roasted malts, caramel with solid hop bitterness backing up the full malt assault. Moderate bitter finish. Really nice stuff.

KyotoLefty (6455) - Kyoto, JAPAN - AUG 25, 2009
Draught at the brewery. Pitch black with a rocky tan head. Malty, roasted aroma with chocolate and caramel. Very well roasted, burnt flavor! Rich malt, with lots of chocolate. Well done! Rich and smooth.

bottled. dark brown with a quickly dissipating head, dark chocolate wafer aroma, plenty of dark malt and sultana flavours with a hint of boiled vegetables suggesting the bottle might have been a bit past its best. still quite okay for a bottled japanese beer

330 mL bottle, thanks to Secret Santa – IslandHaole! Rich, transparent black colored liquid with a bronze-garnet hue. Darkly toasted grain and faint coffee aromatics, matched with a nice prune and semi-sweet chocolate presence. Sharp, acidic palate with a grainy carbonation. Flavours aren’t quite as full as the aroma offering some fresh tree bark, burnt raisins and charred oak. All around pretty tasty beer.

Bottle. Opaque black, tan head. Nice roasted coffee aroma with strong nut and dark-malt presence. The coffee is the most prominent of the flavors but the mouthfeel is just too thin. Needs to be thicker, more alcohol presence, etc. I seem to write this about a lot of otherwise-good Japanese micros. Slightly estery but somehow this doesn’t hurt the finish as much as it does most beers.

IslandHaole (1091) - Yokosuka-Shi, Kanagawa-Ken, JAPAN - MAY 31, 2004
A very dark brown with a large light brown head. Nice roasty malts in the nose. Mild with some bittersweet roastiness in the flavor. Considering I’m not a Dark Lager fan, this is decent enough.
