3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured on draft at the source. Pours a darker brown to black with a lighter beige head of foam. The aroma has notes of wet wood, vanilla, light butterscotch, and biscuits. Tastes of an aggressive sweetness with a lot of barrel note coming through. Tasty stuff.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
A black beer with a reddish tinge and a small brown head. The aroma is roasted malt, cocoa, and vanilla. The flavor is likewise heavy on roasted malt and chocolate with alcohol and slight woodiness.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured into a perfect pint.
3.5 A: Black color. Two fingers of frothy tan head. Retention is good given the ABV, but no lacing is left.
4.0 S: Dry roastiness. Cocoa powder and lager yeast caramel. Simple, but delightful.
4.0 T: Tastes like the nose, but much much sweeter, which I like. Roastiness, bittersweet chocolate, lots of caramel, and lager yeast flavor (which is hard to explain). Very tasty.
4.0 M: Medium body. Rich velvety feel. Good moderate carbonation. Lightly creamy.
4.0 D: I very much enjoy a good Schwarz and this is one of them.

Cask version at Winking Lizard’s 4th Annual Real Ale Fest (03/24/12): The beer pours dark brownish-black with a thin tan head that recedes quickly. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of smoked malt and chocolate. Medium body with a smoky character and notes of charred malt, bittersweet chocolate and some plastic. The finish is smoky and woody. Decent overall.

Sampled at the 4th Annual Winking Lizard Cask Ale Festival. Dark brown pour with a thin beige head. Aroma of bourbon, a bit of smoke, tobacco and wood. Chocolate flavor with lots of oak to the point of tasting a bit plasticky with a boozy and fruity finish.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle poured into pint glasses produced a white head that went a way to nothing on top of a black bodied brew.
The beer had a nice bready aroma with a light roasted malt smell. I liked the flavor if I didn’t see the darkness of the brew I would have not know it was a dark beer. Nice and light flavors a little sweat but with enough roast flavors to finish smooth. It was light in my mouth with great carbonation.
An easy drinking brew I finished my glass with no problem and was left wanting for more. A good Schwarzbier, I buy the beer just for the label it’s that funny.

7/09/2008: RN Dark Helmet Bourbon Aged Imperial Schwarzbier does have much aroma, but is sweet and mlaty with plenty of bourbon coming through in the flavor. I is very dark brown in color with a whisp of an off-white crown. The beer feels syrupy yet smooth in the mouth. I daresay that the barrel-aging actually stripped this beer of it’s delicate Schwarzbier characteristics. It added some bourbon, but not it just tastes like a plain bourbon brown or something...
Draught at The Brew Kettle in Strongsville, Ohio. Rating #16 for this beer.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
On tap at The Brew Kettle. Dark black color with light tan and quickly diminishing head with hardly any lace. Smokey aroma and a taste to match but not overpowering. Feels carbonated at the first sip on the lips and a bit of a kick on the roof of the mouth but finishes smooth.
