3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 9/20
UPDATED: JUN 13, 2012 Bottle @ Dan’s house. Dark brown appearance with a tan head. Rich chocolate, herbal, grassy, light coffee aroma. Herbal, minty, dark chocolate, roasty, straw flavor. Not nearly as boozy as the last time I had it.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
22oz bomber bottle consumed in April 2010. Dark red/brown but not quite schwarz. Malt is more bready than roasty in the aroma. Almost like black rye bread. On the palate there’s chewy fruit and licorice. Also lots of creamy chocolate. Rather sweet for my taste.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bomber from Belmont Party Supply shared at the 16th Richmond Ratebeer Gathering, 11/5/11. Pours very dark brown with a medium fizzy brown head. Fair head retention. Aroma of roasted malts, smoke and sweet malts. The taste is rich roasted malts, coffee, sweet malts and faint hops. Medium-full bodied. Nice.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at the Brew Kettle. Poured darker garnety-brown with a short cap of beige head. The aroma picked up sweet toasty and roasty black malts (semi-sweet chocolate and licorice came through) upfront with some dark fruit, herbs, and almost rye-ey spices behind. The flavor was sweeter with chocolate, molasses, and blackberries.. toasty with alcohol-accented blacker malt bitterness around the edges.. spicy and warm on the finish with more dark fruit. Medium-plus bodied and smooth on the palate, again with a spicy, warm finish.. solid balance.. cool that this heavier brew still held onto its schwarzbier roots.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sample at the brewpub. This brew is a dark brown color with a medium thin beige head that diminishes steadily. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Roasty malt and spiced hops aroma. Medium body with the roasted malt characted of a Schwarzbier with an assertive hops presence. Touches of coffee as well. The finish is roasted coffee and hops with a lingering bitterness left behind. I like the sweetness of a good Scharzbier and evidently the "Imperialization" of this beer meant more hops. While an interesting result it doesn’t really deserve the Schwarz moniker, it’s something else entirely.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from Crizay that I took to a tasting at Andy’s. Pours a nice deep black with a medium tan head. Roast, smoke, chocolate, dark fruit, and a touch of molasses. Light roast and sweet malt flavors. Finishes with more roast and a hint of bitter cocoa. Pretty good, and the name and label are great.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Love the label on this one. Bomber courtesy of alexsdad06. Pours dark brown with a thin white head. Smells of caramel, molasses, a touch of roasted malt. Tastes of chocolate, some fruity hints, roasty with a peppery splash on the finish. Bitter aftertaste. Definitely not a schwarzbier but drinkable.
