UXO (1255) - CANADA - DEC 2, 2014
2014 Advent Calendar #2, 330ml, best before 2/2015. Pours clear pale gold with a short, short-lived white head, no lacing. (3/5) Nose is cracker and biscuity malt, grassy hops, faint fruit and citrus. (6/10) Taste is mild sweet, moderately strong bitter. (7/10) Light to medium body, low carbonation, lingering and building bitter finish. (3/5) A fairly standard light ESB, with perhaps a little more emphasis on the bitter, and pleasantly low sweetness. The body, yeast, and malt are all quite light for the style. Pleasant enough with dinner, but not really worth looking for again. (12/20)

Faint aroma of syrupy malts. Golden pour, no head and no lacing. Very light flavour of caramel malts and a touch of honey. Very different from an English ESB but fun to try!

330ml bottle pours a golden color with a finger of white head that dissipates quickly leaving only a few spots of lacing on the glass. Aroma is grassy with some hints of lighter fruits and citrus. Taste is a grassy hop bitterness with a grainy malt sweetness. Light bodied with moderate carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, this is just below average for the style and could use a little more body to it.

Oakes (14671) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - DEC 1, 2014
Bottle. Light bronze. Bright. Thin head. The aroma is a little bit toasty, with crackery malts, and a spicy hop note. Very clean taste, with crystal/cracker character, moderate bitterness and a spicy hop note. The yeast is a bit too clean for a British style but otherwise it’s a well-balanced beer with enough hop dryness to be appetizing.

Bottle. Golden lager looking pour. Aroma is light grains, toffee, and bread. Taste is light bitterness, grains, quick crisp finish. Nothing offensive, very crisp and clean but doesn’t carry a lot of flavour.

Kauge (1266) - Tallinn, ESTONIA - NOV 22, 2014
Bottle as a gift from Espoo. BB due in a week. Label - fugly. Pours clear amber. White head retains as thin film, leaves nice lacing. Nose is dank autumny fruits and leaves, herbal hops, caramel. Taste quite pleasant but not enough bitterish, semisweet malts and herbal-earthy hops, putrid and dried fruits... Body medium plus, active and crisp carbonation, palate kind of watery, finish very grassy dry and resiny bitter (quite pleasant actually), lingers. Overall rather simplistic and unimpressive but not exactly bad - would not mind sessioning at some Aki Kaurismäki-style bar if not much else available.

Has an amber colour. It’s a well balanced and nicely flavoured Bitter with light, floral hop bitterness.

Bottle. I wanted to like this one, but alas. Clear gold, no head. Sweet, boring aroma, corn and cracker notes, some bitterness. Note quite a lager, but barely a bitter. Dominated by cracker flavour, with just a little bit of ESB bitter character.

Bottle - Pale malts and some herbal notes. Clear gold with a decent white head. Bitter root and herbal notes, caramel malts and a dry bitter finish. Bitter but not bad.

Tasted in Helsinki in a warm summer afternoon. Definetely this beer fits the goal to cool down the overheated tourist. Epic bitter palate but otherwise nothing special. Healthy texture however head on beer disappeared quickly. Ideal for summer even in Northern Europe.
