Bottle. Copper with a pillowy off white foam. Aromas are raisins with wood and peppery yeast. Stewed apple with light toffee and mixed spices. Earthy, ripe pear with bonfire and bready yeast. Flavours are sweet raisins with mixed spices and earthy pear. Hints of aniseed with herbal notes. Brown sugar with bittersweet lemon and pithy rind. Quite nice even in August.

Leighton (10543) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - JAN 7, 2014
Bottle at Pigs Ear Beer Festival 2013 - London. Pours clear amber with a creamy, off-white head. The nose holds leather fruits, lightly aged malts and dirty leaves. Light to medium sweet with notes of ripe fruits, faint wood, slight leafy bitterness, bready malts. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Moderate sweetness to finish with further leather, some toasted sugars. Nice aged character to this one. Solid ESA.

Bottle. Muddy ruby with a slender beige collar. Aroma of mildew, sherry, exotic fungus, wet basement and beansprout. Beansprout, redcurrant, dank old sherry and cola flavour with attempts at salvaging roast and sake. Deeply strange. And more suited for the wok than the tulip.

Brown 500ml bottle, best before 01-2011, drank 12-2009. Poured carefully into a vase shaped pint glass (Old Speckled Hen badged). This bottle conditioned beer poured without much of a head, the body a semi-cloudy mahogany brown, expected more of an explosive look. This was a Christmas present (to myself), so the normal smell of malts and hops associated with standard UK bitters/beers was a big let down. A hint of cinnamon and Christmas type spices only appeared because I wanted them too, proper traces of other yuletide goodies couldn’t be found even though I tried to imprint them into the review! Flavours: Malty yes, Christmas Winter Warmer, sadly no. Fails to produce the goods in the difficult winter brew stakes. A good beer without a doubt, but lacks the punch or umph to excite. I love to champion the small brewery guy, but this left a hole in my appreciation rankings. The 6% ABV was well hidden and a hop bittereness could be found in the aftertaste, but it wasn’t rich or creamy enough to be a world beating Winter Warmer. I note the use of wheat in the ingredients, this might explain the weak bodyfeel for a British Winter Warmer. I actually enjoyed the beer!
