COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The rhinoceros may not be the king of the jungle, but he commands respect nonetheless. Powerful and distinctive, Telegraph Rhinoceros pays homage to one of the world’s most majestic and endangered creatures. Brewed with a hefty dose of rye malt and balanced by a ridiculous amount of hops, our "rye wine" is truly a unique beast. Be careful... this rhino may seem mellow at first, but is known to charge unexpectedly!

Type: 750ml (25.3 oz.) bottle Glass: Fuller’s London pint glass From: Armada Wine & Beer Merchant in Santa Barbara, Calif. Price: $12.99 Purchased: July 4, 2014 Consumed: July 6, 2014 Misc.: Batch No. 145 Poured a caramel, honey, amber color with two fingers of khaki white frothy head. Similar to look to the Goose Island Pere Jacques that I just had. Average spots of spider web lacing along the sides of the glass. Average retention on the top all the way down. Smelled caramel, toffee, plum, slight maple syrup, butterscotch, floral notes, rye and sweetened iced tea. Tasted caramel and toffee up front. The booziness is there, no hiding the 10.0% ABV. Some maple syrup, rye, sugary flat iced tea, floral sugary notes and light butterscotch. Medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Long, boozy finish. A pretty good barleywine. Not in my Mt. Rushmore of barleywines, but it was pretty tasty.

From a bottle - Batch No. 66. Aroma has a nice, darker caramel character with quite a bit of toffee. Faint roast and chocolate notes. Moderate raisin, fig and prune with a bit of alcohol spice. Light, earthy hop notes. Medium light honey and oxidation notes. A faint, slightly off, seaweed note. Pours a somewhat cloudy copper color with some burnt amber and light brown hues. Somewhat small, daily thin tan head that recedes fairly quickly to a thin film that lingers, slightly thicker on the edges. Light lacing with medium sized legs. Flavor has a light tartness in it with a moderately strong, harsh metallic character. Moderate bitterness. Some cherry and faint berry fruit notes along with raisin and prune. Medium caramel and toffee notes along with faint roast and toasted bread. Metallic aftertaste with some caramel and toasted bread. Some alcohol spice in the finish as well. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Medium low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall this really isn’t a good barleywine, but I am sure age had something to do with the acidity. The aroma is far better than flavor. I doubt the age really had anything to do with the harsh, metallic aftertaste.

750 ml bottle via a trade I did a few years ago. Can’t remember who sent it- thanks, Southern California nice guy! Bottled 4 February 2010. I actually thought it was older by a year or so. Anyway, pours a somewhat cloudy amber color with some red-orange hue and a moderate off-white head. Notes of caramel, brown sugar, rye, dried fruits (raisin, fig), and a steady, warming booze throughout. The hops have pretty much died here due to my 3+ year cellaring of it. Medium-bodied, with a boozy, malty mouthfeel and moderate carbonatoin. Nice barley wine.

Strykzone (4913) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - MAY 1, 2013
Sampled at esbls. Left by Hayduke. Opaque red gold. A blotchy off white head. This smells like a barley wine. Malty and grainy. Big fruit is tasted. Hops are fruity and floral. This is sweet and it hides the abv well. Nice.

750ml bottle. Clearish amber orange with a big foamy off white head. Aroma of herbal tea, spice, caramel, citrus and floral. Flavor is sweet honey malt, musty yeast, spicy and alcohol. Medium body with active carbonation. Very interesting beer, sweet, spicy, musty, herbal, it has a lot going on and comes together fairly well.

FROTHINGSLOSH (4909) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 11, 2013
Sampled on draft at the House of 1000 beers this beer poured a caramel-brown color with a small foamy tan head that faded quickly and left minimal lacing. The aroma was sour with toasted caramel, fig and Worcestershire sauce. The flavor was sour toasted caramel, fig, apple, Worcestershire sauce and tobacco with an astringent and medicinal undertone. Medium length finish of caramel, apple and Worcestershire sauce. Medium body though a bit undercarbonated. Disappointing.
