A porter designed to be smooth and irresistible, Black is back, with a controlled roast character, hint of coffee with chocolate on the side followed by a depth charge of palate cleansing late American hops.

Aroma is malt, chocolate and coffee. Flavour and body are both lighter than that might suggest, with a hint of hop and quite a fruity tang to it as well. Despite it not being the richest in body it’s got quite a hearty taste and an earthy aftertaste.

Bottle split on the train to Sirensville, thanks to Paulo, 11/07/15. Light black with a decent beige covering. Nose is light roast, charr, biscuit, dark fruit rinds, light spice. Taste comprises cocoa powder, roast malt, light charr, toffee, toasted brown sugar. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, light hop presence in the close. Solid porter, good balance.

Bottle thanks to paul. Mahogany brown nice mid tan head. Aroma is woody nutty brown malts, bark, toasted roast. Flavour is composed of nutty, dry roast, mineral, chalk, brown malts, bark. Palate is medium bodied, dry finish, highish carbonation. Nice robust porter. Little coconut character.

Bottle shared on the train to Siren - thanks to Paul. Pours deep brown with a frothy tan head. Nice meaty roasty malt aroma, char, cocoa. Medium sweet flavorbwith some burnt marshmallow, raisin, burnt wood, chocolate. Medium bodied with fine carboantion. Nice ashy roast in the finish, pleasantly rounded cocoa, moderate earthy bitterness. Good stuff overall.

Bottle shared on the train. It pours near black with a small tan head. The nose is earthy roast, umami, cooking chocolate and liquorice. The taste is bitter, earthy roast, varnish, toasty, cocoa, peppercorn, mild acidity, coffee and a touch of citrus peel with a dry, toasty finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Rather tasty and well-crafted porter.

Bottle from Appellation Wines Comely Bank. Called Elemental Dark Ale. Appearance - opaque black with a decent creamy head. Nose - light chocolate but more raisins. Light brown sugar. Taste - dark chocolate and sugar again. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly balanced finish. Overall - a decent porter.
