Our latest brew is an Imperial strength Barrel-Aged Scotch Ale. We have taken a traditional beer style and given it a modern day makeover — with a Tempest twist.
Brewed back in September 2012 using smoked malted barley courtesy of Teviot Smokehouse, and fermented using two different yeast strains specially produced for this beer in our brewery, you might be able to tell we’ve given this brew some extra TLC. It’s been cold matured in the brewery for six months in tank, bourbon and sherry casks, and then lovingly blended together into a powerful contemporary ale with plenty of history.
The resulting beer is huge on the nose with a hit of smoked stone fruit, wood, sweet malt, sherry and spice. Bottled and labelled by hand this ale is a rare breed indeed, and with limited availability it won’t be around for long. So get yours while you can.

Bottle. Hazy brown body with a thin beige head. Faint lacing. Aroma of rum, raisin, treacle, chocolate cake and coffee. Flavour of prunes, nuts, orange peel and Coca-Cola with a peppery spice on the finish. Medium body with a slick, oily texture. Light fizz. A perfect Christmas beer - despite the slug-like yeast film that fell out with the final pour. Rich and boozy.

500 ml bottle shared by Cuso at RB Tasting Vienna March Edition. Thanks!
Brown, hazy body, with a medium, creamy, beige head.
Aroma of dried fruits, spices, smoke, sweet malts, some bourbon.
Taste quite follows this, with more alcohol presence and more caramel like sweet malts.
Medium, oily mouthfeel, with a lively carbonation.
Finishes alcoholic, a bit dry, with sour dried fruits, some smoke.

Scotch Ale isn’t my style and this one is no exception. But still a good beer and a nice opportunity, as this seems to be quite limited. Lots of sweet, heavy malts, with boozy, barrel aging notes.
