COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Midnight IPA takes a traditional India Pale Ale, a hoppy high alcohol beer originally brewed in England in the 19th century, and adds a 21st century twist: it’s jet-black. Brewed using a new roasted wheat from America (called Midnight wheat, and giving our beer its name), this black IPA achieves its colour without most of the roasted flavours and aromas you would normally expect in such a dark beer. Our take on this new sub-style of IPA is as hoppy as they come. The aroma offers an explosion of piney resinous hops, achieved through multiple kettle and dry hopping charges of Columbus, Centennial and Simcoe. If you were to close your eyes, you’d be convinced you were holding a highly hopped IPA from the Pacific Northwest. It’s deceptively smooth and sessionable, so tread carefully.

Definitely an easy drinker. Bland when too cold but very worthwhile above 8c. Aroma some light grassy hop character with dark toffee. Flavour some cocoa and toasty notes. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Just a really nice smooth beverage with a nice amount of bitterness and tasty aroma bought about by a well brewed and used hops. Almost pitch black poor with a tan head that does not disappear. This is an awesome beer that goes down so easily.

500mL bottle, pours black with a tan head and an amazing sweet hoppy/grapefruit aroma with a hint a darker malt. Straight up i get the grapefruit flavour as the perfect carbonation dances over the tongue. Its all backed up by a nice malt backing which is hard to pull flavour from because the hops dominate as they should. Amazing black IPA and i have loved every temple beer so far.

Pours the expected ’midnight’ black, although some reddish highlights can still be seen. Fluffy tan head with visible carbonation. Toasty malt and pine resin come through in the aromas. Pine resin and hoppy bitterness are to the fore on tasting, but this mellows out leaving a more rounded chocolate and malt flavours at the end, with just a hint of vanilla. This is a big but very well balanced black IPA. Very tasty indeed.

UPDATED: FEB 20, 2013 Smell is hops and roasted character. Taste is more resiny quality in amongst the dark malts. Palate is perhaps too bitter after roast fades; not enough fruity dry hopped character. But it is a beer which grows on you, once you can deal with the bitterness. Ended up liking the intensity and boldness.

This is an odd one. It looks great with a reasonable aroma, upfront it has a nice taste but it quickly deteriorates to become really bitter and unpleasant. Overall not the best Black IPA.

Pine hops strong on the nose. Taste is very smooth with medium-high bitterness and includes plenty of hops but with a strong dark chocolate flavor.

Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours black with a short tan head. Big piney hop aroma, smells like a killer IPA. Taste is awesome, dark malts blended with a nice hop profile make for a complex and challenging style. Dark malts, chocolate, pine and a touch of light citrus. Great bitterness, great body, great beer.

Interesting beer. Hop flavour, roasted malt bitterness, yet really sessionable. Will have again

500ml bottle from mane liquor. Pours a deep borderline black with a 1 finger dense white head that just hangs there till the end. Very mild "green hoppy" aroma. Great roasted malt and espresso taste that follows with a faint mocha end. The most notable part of this beer was the smooth mild bitterness of the hops which hit you from the start and just makes u want to go back for more! The only disappointing part of the beer was when I realised I didn’t have any more left.
