ortified by extra hops and alcohol to withstand the journey by ship from England, India Pale Ales were some of the first to explore the flavor and aroma of hops over malt. Imperial IPA’s are typically brewed with significant amounts of hops to showcase hop bitterness, flavor, and aroma. Ten Ninety Imperial IPA explores resinous hops and rich barley in perfect harmony. Three bold hop varieties lend grapefruit, orange, pine, and pepper flavors that are steadied by a firm backbone of rich malted barley with deep chestnut and toffee aspects. Bold Cajun, Mexican, and Asian dishes complement our complex interaction of hops and barley.

Excellent balance for a double IPA. It has a great balance of caramel malt and resin and citrus flavors. Excellent citrus nose as well.

Bomber from Tavour labeled 72 Hour Work Week Imperial IPA. I called the brewery and found it was a new label and name for the Imperial IPA so am adding my rating here 10% ABV. Nose is pine, grapefruit, and tangerine. Clear orange with a bigger, lightly lacing light beige head. Flavor is big peppery, lightly bitter, with lots of white pepper and a bit of nuttiness. It nicely compliments the homemade fired rice my wife fixed for dinner.

Oh god, not worth the calories or the money. Usually, Ten Ninety is my bro, but not with this. No taste other than aspirin - and not nearly malty enough.

12oz bottle from Breeze Thru. Had to get it, after experiencing the Impy porter a year ago 4th, with Austin around. Orangey pour. Nose has overlayered fruits and pepper. Taste is smoother than the nose, but thick, peppery and piney. Too much. 13.3

UPDATED: JUN 6, 2015 Pours amber with a relatively short head (maybe 1/2"). Aromas of grapefruit, pineapple, orange with a floral bouquet. Taste is exceedingly complex: to my palate it taste like a very sophisticated blend of a Belgian-style ale and an IPA. Has that sweet, almost steely caramel flavor and an intense sugary sweetness, but that fades to a bitter, piney flavor as it hits the back of the throat. It’s unique and different, and at 10% ABV you can’t just throw them back, but it’s very good.

UPDATED: FEB 5, 2015 On tap at Lunar Brewing Co., and snifter served showing a clear, coppery gold color, with a frothy layer of soft white head foam, and wavy spray to the lacing. The nose was lightly dank & ripe, with a hint of freezer-burn-like scent at first, then fruit sweetness with a bit of spice, as stone fruit preserves/jam. The esters continued in the taste, with malt sweetness, noticeable alcohol, and some earthy bitterness, but not enough hop expression to make it an appealing Imperial. Seemed to want to jump to Barleywine status. Okay flavor, otherwise.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours hazy dark orange/amber color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, mango, peach, pineapple, lemon, orange peel, light pine, floral, grass, caramel, toffee, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/tropical hops and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, mango, peach, pineapple, lemon, orange peel, light pine, floral, grass, caramel, toffee, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Fair amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, mango, peach, lemon/orange zest, caramel, toffee, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and robustness of citrus/tropical hops and balanced dark/bready malt sweetness; with a good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, and lightly slick/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice DIPA. All around good balance, robustness, and complexity of citrus/tropical hops and dark/bready malt sweetness; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle @ Three Notch’d Tasting. Gold pour with a small white head. Nose is malt-heady. Weird smoky accents. Stewed leaf pile. Taste is similar. Loads of smoke that seems quite out of place. Paper. Light body, active carbonation. A fiasco.

UPDATED: MAY 8, 2015 Poured from the bottle of a 4-pack into my pint glass via the freezer. Bought this warm but within 30 min was a nice icy cold. Lots of white chunky foam like a root beer float. This beer is very smooth and drinkable. Taste-able hops, well hidden alcohol, and a little bitter at the back end but my mouth was never dry. The 10.0% alcohol is impressive, makes this a very good go-to.

Unfortunately, this has to be one of the worst double IPAs I’ve ever tasted. I sampled a pint of this at a theater show in Chicago. The beer poured a cloudy orange color with a decent-sized off-white head. The nose was quite malty, with just a touch of spicy hops. Unfortunately the flavors followed suit. There was just not enough hops in this beer. I got mostly sweet and bready malts in the body of flavors. Quite disappointing.
