ortified by extra hops and alcohol to withstand the journey by ship from England, India Pale Ales were some of the first to explore the flavor and aroma of hops over malt. Imperial IPA’s are typically brewed with significant amounts of hops to showcase hop bitterness, flavor, and aroma. Ten Ninety Imperial IPA explores resinous hops and rich barley in perfect harmony. Three bold hop varieties lend grapefruit, orange, pine, and pepper flavors that are steadied by a firm backbone of rich malted barley with deep chestnut and toffee aspects. Bold Cajun, Mexican, and Asian dishes complement our complex interaction of hops and barley.

Excellent balance for a double IPA. It has a great balance of caramel malt and resin and citrus flavors. Excellent citrus nose as well.

Unfortunately, this has to be one of the worst double IPAs I’ve ever tasted. I sampled a pint of this at a theater show in Chicago. The beer poured a cloudy orange color with a decent-sized off-white head. The nose was quite malty, with just a touch of spicy hops. Unfortunately the flavors followed suit. There was just not enough hops in this beer. I got mostly sweet and bready malts in the body of flavors. Quite disappointing.

12 ounce bottle shared at a tasting. Pours a hazy amber with a large frothy tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of citrus, tropical hops, caramel and toffee. The taste is bitter citrus and tropical hops and pale malt. Medium bodied, lingering bitterness.

Poured from the bottle, this pours a Huge foamy (like shaving cream) head, but not large enough to subtract points. The body is a clear golden amber. The aroma is strong with yellow grapefruit, lemon, and zest. The malt emerges in the taste as lightly sweet cereal and provides and provides almost enough backbone to support the stirringly bitter hops, tasting much as the nose suggests. The finish is dry with a prolonged zest and pips bitterness. This is a dandy drink for this old hop-head.

This is an IIPA that almost reaches the "good" level in my book. It has a MASSIVE head rivaling some Belgians. That head is a pain in the ass because it takes a good while to dissipate so that you can actually drink it. The aroma is booze, caramelized sugars, orange and grapefruit. The taste is caramel, more orange than grapefruit, piney hops and that peppery note mentioned on the label - and also that booze. The alcohol is a bit too overpowering in the taste and drowns out the other flavors slightly. It’s OK, but definitely not one I care to have again.

Pours with a very high amount of carbonation, borderline champagne. Huge head evolves from and ultimately leaves a lot of lacing on the glass. Aroma has a very large amount of grapefruit and orange citrus with a light pine coming in late and is rounded out with a light caramel malt sweetness. Flavor has a lot of grapefruit and orange up front which transitions to some alcohol heat. The alcohol combines to create a hot, fruity middle with a sweet caramel malt finish. Body is modest with a very high amount of carbonation which forces the retention of the very large head. Overall a good brew but the alcohol is 10% and you can feel it with ever sip. I find this a bit distracting in the brew as the head is so prevalent. The flavors are pretty standard and make for an okay beer.

750 ml bottle. Pours a rich dark amber pour with a huge khaki colored head. Aroma is floral hops with lots of citrus, grapefruit peel, pine, and caramel notes. Flavor is fairly bitter with a mild fruity sweetness. Some strong caramel and ice tea malt sweetness as well. Full bodied, very carbonated, with a medium bodied. Finishes long and bitter.
