Created in 18th century London, porters were some of the first mass-produced and consumed beers of the industrial revolution. Porter evolved from a blend of brown and darker beers that were precursors to stouts. Tradition has it that these beers were favored by porters and other physical laborers. Ten Ninety Imperial Porter is fiery elegance. Our porter is brewed with ample Munich, mild brown and de-bittered black malts for a chocolaty, espresso base. To contrast this bittersweet backbone, we added an ample dose of cayenne pepper, and tempered this heat with tart pomegranate juice. Ten Ninety Imperial Porter is a perfect match for bold, smoky and cured meats as well as deeply roasted fowl and caramelized seafood.

Bottle - Pours brown/black with a thin white head. Nose smells like a straight-up porter with light pepper. Taste is lightly roasty and a touch of fruit. Really hot peppers that build and just overpower--real hot. Too much heat--it really distracts.

Dark brown/black color; Medium creamy body; Aroma of toasted/smoky malt, dark chocolate, & coffee; Flavor of roasted sweet malt, caramel, dark chocolate, some dark fruit, and chili/cayenne peppers Hot spicy finish; Unique for sure - but a tad too spicy.

From a bottle poured a dark brown color with a small amount of head. Spicy hot flavor with a lingering aftertaste.

This is one of the most unique beers on the market. It blends the tartness of pomegranate, chocolate roasted malt, and heat from cayenne pepper perfectly. It has a distinct three stage tasting profile. You get the tartness from the pomegranate on the front of your tongue. Then you taste the roasted malts across the middle of your tongue. Finally, you get a kick of hear from the cayenne.

750 ml bottle. Pours a rich dark brown with a tan head. Aroma of chocolate, mild fruit and smoke, touches of pepper and mocha. Some chocolate and mild roast notes. Flavor is mildly bitter with a medium amount of spiciness and heat, with a dappling of fruity sweetness. The heat is surprising, but welcome, as a lot of pepper-centric beers skimp on the head. Medium bodied, somewhat chocolatey, with creamy carbonation. Finishes long with heat. Impressive.

UPDATED: JAN 25, 2014 From a bomber in a snifter. Pours mostly opaque black. Aroma is rich fruity malt. Initial flavor is sweet and crisp. Cayenne pepper only comes in on the roof of your mouth in the finish. Very well balanced for such a spicy beer. Definitely spicy but doesn?t hit you over the head with it and has enough sweetness and maltiness to keep up. However, the more you drink the spiciness becomes unappetizing. I recommend splitting a bomber 3 ways at least to enjoy it.

Deep-hued, clear red-brown. No head. Smells predominantly of pepper, coffee, molasses, some hints of chocolate. Starts slightly bitter, some sweetness. Spiciness creeps in and then gets stronger and stronger until it is essentially the only flavor. Quite a light body for a porter, incredibly lively from the enormous acidity. Creaming and oily. Amazingly long finish. Unbalanced a beer as they come when drinking by itself, but quite interesting. Could be awesome if the cayenne pepper was toned back a bit, it hides a lot of complexity.

Had this on tap at the Arrogant Frog Bar. 12 oz in. Tulip. Black. As described this has great balance of coffee expresso chocolate and hot! The cayenne pepper stands out. Unique and good

On tap at Bad Apple in Chicago. Muddy brown appearance, low level of foam. Aroma is freshly cut hot peppers and Mexican chocolate. It reminded me of spicy candy from a Central American grocery store. Flavor is heavy on the pepper heat, mild malt backing and a soothing chocolate presence that helps keep the pepper aspect in check. There’s some crisp fruit aspects, possibly the pomegranate, on the back end too. Lighter bodied than I expected, pretty smooth and crisp despite the dark appearance and rich flavor profile. Long lasting taste that throws in with a slight nasal kick. Overall this is a very dynamic and complex beer that melds several bold flavors together nicely, and one of the spiciest porters I’ve had in recent memory.

Sampled at the Solstice Fest at Oak Forest, during the Blackhawks victory in Game 5). This is a small sample in a big glass, so it’s a little hard to catch the full nose. But there is that note of sweet chocolate and java. Blackish brown body with a thin layer of foam. I catch the alcohol immediate,m and am brought up by surprise by the not of chile: I had not known until I asked the brewer that there was indeed cayenne pepper in it! Not so much the pomegranate, but this certainly is a porter with a new dimension or two. A big surprise that stands out in its style.
