Hauling oats is hard work. Donkeys are motivated by carrots. Here at Tenaya Creek we are motivated by beer. Especially when it has the subtle aroma of chocolate chip oatmeal cookies.
It is easy to forget about the long journey ahead when a dark ale with a golden tan head is in hand. So drop the reins, pry open the lid and enjoy the rounded, smooth pull. Take a breath and savor the notes of semi-sweet chocolate and hearty oats.
Your donkey deserves a reward for all its hard work
- just don’t share this treat! ABV: 5.7%

My first impression while watching the dark medium head dissipate was an aroma of dried plums or raisins bouncing around with the chocolate and grassy hop aromas. Once it warmed up, the roasted malts were far more dominant. It delivers a classic oatmeal stout sweetness that doesn’t go too far but enough to round out the touch of bitterness really well. This full bodied beer is silky, smooth and thick with an understated carbonation. If only I had a brownie right now.

Aroma: 6/10. Surprisingly piney and hopped for an oatmeal stout. Gentle notes of coffee and chocolate, a little caramel. Appearance: 5/5. Beautiful cola-brown pour with a thin white head that lingers. Taste: 7/10. Surprisingly highly hopped for an oatmeal stout, but exceptionally well balanced on the hopping; a pleasant piney bitterness overlaying gentle, chalky sweet malts and minerality. Little bit of coffee, some chocolate, some caramel. Palate: 4/5. Smooth over the tongue and teeth, as you’d expect from an oatmeal stout, with a lingering, pleasant light bitter coffee, nutty finish. Overall: 15/20. If you like oatmeal stouts but wish they were hopped higher, with overtones of pine, you’ll like this one. Even if, like me, you usually drink stouts because you hate hops, this brew balances the hops perfectly.

Decided to use my discount on this one. I’ve had a few beers from Tenaya Creek before and I was rather interested in giving this one a shot, as my store has a number of them. First thing, it pours a lovely, impenetrable black with some generous tan-coloured head. aroma is a lot hoppier than I had expected, but this is not something that turns me off. I ca best describe the aroma as ’round’, which is an odd way to put it, but there is a king of dark malt-green hops balance going on in the nose that is leaving my senses confused. Most oatmeal stouts I have had until now have been chocolate-and-coffee affairs that focus on the malts, so my brain is unsure. Flavour is decidedly smokey, which surprised me a bit, but it is a very pleasant surprise as I don’t get that kind of flavour out of beers very often. Smokey chocolate, coffee, pretty good balance between sweet and bitter with a bit more focus on the bitter side of things. A very nice if unusual stout.
