2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
13-Dec-11 (22-oz bottle: Gift received 10-Dec-11 from my friend Melissa)
Coming immediately after the miserable experience with the bad bottle of their Calico Brown, this Oktoberfest seems like heaven, but it’s still only a marginally good beer. The beer is predominantly malty, tasting very toasty, slightly roasty, nutty, and woodsy with a bit of caramely sweetness, while a touch of generic hops adds light-medium bitterness. This really doesn’t taste like any Oktoberfest I’ve tried, and honestly, if the label said Brown Ale, I might not suspect a labeling mix-up (though it’s a bit light for that style too). There’s also a hint of huskiness in the finish that contributes a bit of astringency as well. The beer is medium in weight, dry on the palate, and medium-plus in carbonation. The malt-centric nose is toasty, nutty, and somewhat caramely and is strangely redolent of beef stew. Pale-amber in color with good clarity, and the inch of almond-colored head settles slowly to a thin layer. Overall, this isn’t a bad beer just to drink mindlessly, but it’s a rather poor example of this traditional German style. It’s a beer I can keep drinking and finish the bottle without deriving much sensory pleasure, but what’s the point of that?

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Sampler flight on tap at the brewery (Las Vegas, NV). Pours a nice crisp orange gold hue, near transparent with some gentle frothy offwhite head. Dies to a ring, laces ok. Aromas are gentle sweetness, vienna malts meet a gentle toastiness, touches of carmelization, and gentle earthy hop, spice. Odd cereal raisin play I get sometimes. Initial is lighter end of the fold, cereal and straw, gentle carmelization. Earthy hops, gentle spiciness. Gets more dry. Middle is a bit toasty, carmelized and bready. A bit plain and predictable, but quite drinkable. Backend is a bit dry and faint metallic and grassy twang. Not bad.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a cloudy amber with an off white head that dissipates. Aroma is nice, probably the beers best characteristic... Very fresh. Notes of: caramel malt, spruce and hop resin, earthy yeast, some alcohol, and hints of butterscotch, clove, and vanilla. Taste is fine and fairly balanced, mostly sour/bitter with a nod towards sweetness. Lingering bitter finish. One of Teneya’s better offerings.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bomber from Hayduke. We had it together via facebook chat. This is lightly hazed deep honey gold. It has a big rocky beige head that settles very slowly and leaves a little lacing. The aroma is fruity and spiced. The first sip shows a subtle beer but a complex and tasty one. Fruits are tropical and some citrus. Bread is tasted with cinnamon and noble hops. Later a little hot pepper slips in. At the finish it becomes like an English Bitter. The hops move in more with the spices and malts stepping back. Noble hops and the spice they bring are in the finish. I like this. Subtle and complex. On a 95 F degree mid summer day this Oktoberfest worked well.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
The nose toasty & herbal. The taste starts with vanilla sweet malts, that balance well with cracker dry grains. The end is full of spicy, peppery & resinous hops. The finish is bready and dry. A much dryer & hoppier interpretation on the style.
