Translated from the Dutch on brewer’s website: Originally brewed as a Christmas beer, this irresistible dark beer for tasting at 7.1% ABV became a permanent fixture almost immediately. It’s a mildly fruit, lightly sweet and soft dark warm fermented abbey beer with three types of malt and two types of hops and additions of light and dark candy sugar. The biggest proportion of malt is Munich barley malt, which has been killed a slightly higher temperature to give a slightly more coloured character than usual. This gives Ter Dolen Donker its biscuit-like flavour. Added to this are light hints of caramel from some caramel malts, along with the typical flavours of light and dark candy sugar. Our Donker is bottle conditioned.

Bottle. Very dark brown with big beige head. Brown sugar, plums, dried pear, rye bread, hopjes, more fruits. Light chocolate and licorice. Quite sweet with light tart touch. Medium bodied with full carbonation. Not bad.

33 cl. bottle @ home, bought @ Hogerdijk, Culemborg. Clear brown with a beige head. Malty aroma with some molasses and hops. Rather bitter for a dubbel, reminds me more of a stout to be honest. Nice long finish. Again a very nice atypical (for the style) beer.

It appears hazy dark red-brown with a medium to minimal tan head that doesn’t last long. The aroma has a lot of coffee, some caramel and chocolate. It tastes medium sweet and light bitter. The finish is dry; the mouthfeel is a bit syrupy. A decent abbey beer.

Taste this beer many times. Also very good score @ blindtasting dark abbybeer 2012 WBF. Almost clear brown color, with reddish shine and creamy beige very stable head. Aroma: sweet, yeast, red fruits note. Medium body. Taste: sweet, good malts, some bitter, red fruits. Good one!

Straddles the line of dubbel and stout in a pretty great way. Dark brown, tan head, sweet dark fruit aroma, nice balanced flavor with some sturdy hop edge. Really good.

Sugar cane aroma. Rather foamy. Quite light taste but still boasts enough flavors. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Would be suitable to drink a few in a row.

Belle mousse qui reste. Cette bière a une belle odeur de canne à sucre. cette bière est crémeuse et a un goût peu prononcé mais très agréable avec un arrière goût légèrement amer.

Abbey dubbel since 1994 (though it bears no relationship at all to any abbey) with pale beige head and dark chestnut colour. Malty profile with yeastiness and delicate candi sugar sweetishness, appealing, with good hop bitterish finish for balance. A lot better than the Blond, if you ask me, and apart from the Armand the best Ter Dolen to my personal taste.
