3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 ChainGangGuy (4123) - Marietta, Georgia, USA - OCT 19, 2011
Appearance: Slips from the growler a clear, dark, mahogany-hued body with a very thin, ivory-hued head.
Smell: Scents of chocolate and toasted pumpernickel bread, with a dusting a spice, and hints of banana, apple, and an incorporated, underlying earthiness.
Taste: Mild pumpernickel bread character with sweet nibbles of chocolate and caramel. Pinch of ground spice tasting of muted cinnamon or nutmeg. Sliver of ’nana and Red Delicious. Soft layer of earthy, herbal hops with a light complimentary bitterness. Semi-dry, meagerly malty finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Overall: A fairly decent dunkel.
2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 coolpop (1163) - Birmingham, Alabama, USA - SEP 12, 2011
UPDATED: SEP 15, 2011 Draft at the brewpub. Poured medium brown with a small off-white head. Odd set of aromas and flavors: earthy, nutty, banana, plus some strange vegetal elements. The nuttiness threw me -- tasted like a brown crossed with a wheat. Didn’t get what they were shooting for, beyond simply being different. I’m not big on dunkelweizens, but I’m not even sure that this really quite was one. My least favorite among those I sampled.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 lithy (3000) - Capital of Appalachia, Pennsylvania, USA - AUG 1, 2010
Dark brown-orange, beige cover. Caramel, toasty wheat aroma. Taste is sweet, caramel, cocoa, wheat.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Shag (2442) - Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA - JUL 27, 2010
This poured a brown color with little head. The aroma was caramel, some citrus, and biscuit. The flavor was very similar to a brown with some caramel, nutmeg, and toffee. I did not get any "wheat" aspects I usually get in a dunkelweizen. Overall this is a pretty good beer but not a dunkelweizen at all.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 jhumphries69 (1034) - Tyrone, Georgia, USA - JUL 14, 2010
Pours dark brown with a light tan head that leaves spots of lace. Aroma has some chocolate and some wheat. Flavor is wheaty and bready with a pleasant up-front fruitiness. Sweet malty, cakey, chocolate-and-banana finish. Mouthfeel is spritzy and creamy with a medium body and a touch of chalkiness. Overall, a nice dunkelweizen (I took home a growler of this one - I liked Magnum PA a little more I think, but my wife preferred this one...)
