BFM swing top versus Terrapin bomber, both from 2011. BFM pours a much darker brown, Terrapin a copper, both with minimal to no head or lacing. Aroma on the BFM is more intense, some roast and dark fruit, hint of vanilla. BFM has some sour notes on the tongue, acetic tartness, Terrapin is much more toward the barley wine, big caramel and vanilla. Terrapin is smoother, BFM is more complex. Definitely a cool beer.

Pours slightly hazy copper color with khaki head. Aromas of caramel, vanilla, oak and rye. Sweet caramel and rye flavors with some vanilla and oak and a hint of alcohol. Minimal bourbon flavor. Medium to full body with soft carbonation.

Hazy brown. This is thick enough that the head builds slowly. Caramel, nuts, a touch of dark dried fruit. Not over the top, but good.

Pours hazy medium brown. Almost headless, very oily appearance pouring.
Aroma is nutty, with dates, caramel, molasses and vanilla.
The flavor follows the aroma. Sweet, full bodied sipper. Some hop bitterness in this but for the most part it’s a malt forward type BW.

Murky brown color. Aroma is slightly wild yeast with a bit of cherry to it. Flavor is deep red fruit, some vanilla, and wood from the ageing. Finish is a little boozy with some wood and grit on the back of the palate. Pretty good drink and it all comes together nicely.

On tap at Rooster’s Beak. Dark red pour with a thick tan top. Scent is malty, woody with a note of bourbon. Taste is wood, caramel, rye and some spicy hops. Good stuff!

Delicious barley wine. Aroma was nice. Toffee, caramel and roasted malt. Pour was a milk chocolate brown with a thin off white film for a head. Taste was big and malty. Sweet brown sugar, caramel and milk with a sticky toffee finish. No hops to speak of. As it warmed, the bourbon came out. Vanilla and bourbon were just a hint, but present. Light carbonation. Nice beer

Bottle from my parents, shared at Chad’s birthday. Brown pour with a white head. Aroma is lots of bready spice and tons of caramel. Taste is rye, brown sugar, caramel, rye, a little alcohol, and a good finish.

11/20/2012. From bottle. Brownish color with a tan head. Malty aromas with the bourbon showing well. A little sweet at first with oak and dried fruit. Warm alcohol towards the end.

Bottle poured into glass. A good amount of bourbon/boozy flavor in this one. Perhaps even a little too much. Maybe a little more aging will do this beer some good.
