2.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Draft at Fermentation. Deep amber pour with a small white head. Aroma is strong malt, resinous hops, booze and green vegetables. Flavor is a huge mess of hot alcohol, astringent hops, and overly sugar sweet caramel malt. Hated this.

Sweet, hoppy, and rich. Always look forward to this every year. Very good fresh, and holds up well in the cellar for a year.

4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Pours a nice coppery-brown with a small off white head. Aroma has that candy-like white pine (sweetly bitter) aroma with a little malt background. Taste is exactly like aroma with lemon, orange, pine & spruce up front fading to a truly interesting chocolate & malt finish. I’ve never had a DIPA like this one and I have to say it is the most shockingly complex and agreeable DIPA I’ve ever had - no exaggeration! You know, it’s kinda like candied orange dipped in chocolate! Absolutely amazing!

3.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
Poured from a bottle clear amber with a slight head. The aroma is caramel and the taste is of toffee and malt. Rather than hoppy. So why is it hop monster?

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
10/3/2010. From bottle. Hoppy aromas with pine, citrus, bread, caramel. A little buttery, but malty and hoppy flavors soon take over. Darn good!

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Pours a very very dark red. Almost brown/copper color. Very thin white head that goes away fast.
Smells of raisins and other dark fruits with some sweet malt/caramel. Very little hop profile in the nose as malts dominate.
Taste is very malt forward. For something called Big Hoppy Monster the hops are nowhere near the malts on this. More raisins and sweet caramel in the taste. Almost a profile of more of a slightly hoppier Belgian than an American red.
Mouthfeel is a little bit low considering the sweetness of the brew. Carbonation levels are med-low.
Really kind of disappointed in this. It’s not bad, but I’d expect something with this name to be considerably hoppier than it is and not a fan of the dark fruit profile. I’ve got some other Terrapin brews that I hope I’ll like better.

UPDATED: JUL 31, 2013 Pours a light copper. super tasty. Aroma of caramel, pine, and hops. Hop heavy, but that goes without saying. Fruity malt in the front hop bite in the back. one of my favorites from Terrapin.
