COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Terrapin Bourbon Wood Barley Wine was done in collaboration with BRM in Switzerland. We brewed the same beer here and across the pond. This is the American version brewed at Terrapin. Itís an American-style barley wine brewed with 15% rye malt for a spicy finish. We also added dark wood chips soaked in rye whiskey for extra depth of character.

Tap. Pours hazy brown with average, creamy, beige head; decent retention and lacing. Aroma is cookie and caramel malts, plums, dates, floral hops, and brown sugar. Flavor is bourbon, sweet malts, vanilla, oak, floral hops, dark fruit esters, and light roast; dry finish. Medium/full body and low carbonation.

Draught. Pours a hazy amber color with relatively little head on it. I find the taste a little sour and somewhat harsh, reminiscent of a dry wine. Alcohol notes come through.

Pretty nice beer. Has good flavor, it has more variety in the mouth than your typical barley wine. The rye and bourbon barrel addes a new experience. Unique beer, Iíd like to try it again. Not at a festival.

Had this at the 2012 Great American Beer Fest in Denver, Colorado. (Barley Ryne) Very light rye flavors and scent, was ok.

Pours very clear dark copper brown with a thin tan head. Faint sweet vanilla sherry aroma. Medium bodied and a bit syrupy. Mellow oaky vanilla and British barley wine flavors--sherry, wine, no hop ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Appearance: Dispensed a rich amber-hued body, a little sudsy up top, and with a surprising degree of clarity.

Smell: Eminently oaken aroma from the very first sniff. Liberally toasted barley, heady caramel, vague fruit compote hints, and an anticipated whiff of booze.

Taste: Sweetness galore featuring plenty of caramel and vibrantly fruity, certainly far more fruity than the nose had let on, with golden apple, pear, peach, mango. And thatís before the additional citric touches from the hops roll in. Oaky woodiness throughout letting loose stray tannins. Bitterness, oak wood, rye spiciness, and booze battle it out with the malty sweetness all the while. Malty, fruity, generously warming finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium-low carbonation.

Overall: I enjoyed this one. Why, I may have even voted it at this yearís ACAT.

On cask at the Atlanta Cask Fest 2012. Pours a deep amber- copper with a white head. Nose is bourbon, wood, vanilla, dark fruits, booze, and toffee. Flavor is syrupy with a ton of dark fruit, bourbon, booze, some vanilla and wood followed by some toffee. Flavor is overall fruity and boozy. Finishes with booze and dark fruit.
