COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
An especially bright, hoppy take on Belgian IPA, Monk’s Revenge is another scary member of Terrapin’s Monster Beer Tour series. This particular version was aged in cabernet barrels from North Carolina’s Shelton Vineyards. Righteous.

4oz pour at Churchkey DC. Pours a hazy amber with some thick, creamy white head. Nose is huge with nail polish, fusel alcohol, some peach brandy, some port, a little candlewax. Flavor is better, a big raw wood character, saw dusty, peach brandy, candy sugar, orange peel, some cheap chardonnay. Big, bright, woody finish.

Bottle at RBWG ’13 Grand tasting. Pours a slightly hazy bright orange golden color with a small white head. The aroma strong cab barrel, floral notes, Belgian yeast, and some fruitiness. The flavor was more cab barrel, caramel and toasted malts, floral notes, spicy at times with a general fruit character. There is quite a bit of the Cab barrel, but everything didn’t seem to come together very well.

Draft. Pours reddish orange with little to no head. Aroma is orange, lemon zest, booze. Taste is complicated - some grape/savory wine notes from the Cab, some barrel/woody notes, sweetness from the belgian yeast. Too much going on here for me. Definitely too "hot" off the tap. Still, I kept sipping...

Lightly hazy gold, white head. Tap at huna day. Odd mix of hops, winey notes, wet oak, caramel. Not harmonious.

Bottle at the RBWG 2014 grand tasting. Pours a clear orange with a tan head that starts and remains at the edges. Aroma has a lot of cabernet, light fruit, sweet grains. Flavor has a strong chardonnay note throughout with a bit of light fruit and sweet grains.

Bottle generously shared at the RBWG grand tasting. The nose has moderate pickle notes, briny with oak. Flavor is heavy on barrel notes with a surprising slight chocolate malt feel. I can’t tell what the base beer was, as this tastes like barrel.

Tasted at RRBF. Cloudy golden amber pour with no head. Nose is spruce-y with some cedary notes and a peppery Rcharacter. A resinous and piney flavor dominate. Weird, didn’t expect this.

A very confused beer. Might have been good if it had decided yo be any one of two of the 6 things it was trying go be. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
