COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Terrapin Hop Karma Brown IPA is a head on collision between a hoppy west coast India Pale Ale and a malty, complex brown ale. Brewed with 5 varieties of hops and 7 different malts, this hybrid style represents the best of both worlds. PEACE, LOVE and HOPPINESS

Nice brown color. light hop aroma and some nutty aromas as well. I like the nutty brown flavors and the more than usual hop character. A nice beer.

UPDATED: AUG 29, 2008 Got a larger bottle of this for a larger sample. Pours a nice copper with some bright ruby highlights in the sun. The head is a finger or two thick, creamy, and yellow. The nose was sweet and hoppy, nice citrusy hop profile over the caramel toffee malt base. Fruity and sweet in the nose. The flavor is sweet, a nice balancing bitterness, some sweet caramel, malty, some nuttyness. The palate is a tad bitter and nicely balanced with a malty sweetness. I find this to be pretty underrated.

RBSG 07 Minneapolis Grand Tasting: Brown ebony, no head or lacing. Nose of earthy citrusy hops, decent malts, some pale thin, some sweet chewy ones. The flavor is hoppy, nice and fresh. Fruity and beautiful.

UPDATED: FEB 21, 2010 Draught. Pours a reddish brown with a small whitish head. The aroma is earthy with whisky barrel notes and baking chocolate. The hops and malt interact in a way which generates a lot of woody bittersweetness. This is not very sticky or sugary, I get bakers chocolate, minimal nuttiness, and soy sauce. I liked it, nothing spectacular, but I liked it.

on tap at Fox & Parrot. Pours a deep dark brown with ruby tints. This is darker than I remember. Oh, wow, definitely hoppier than I remember. Solid grapefruit and clean pine comes through. I really can’t detect much malt that would indicate this being a brown ale. The flavor packs a clean punch of PNW hops with a finish of nutty cacao that finally makes a hint at somehing other than IPA. This is better than I recall. Good stuff!

Cask @ Tyler’s in Durham. Was told that 1oz of hops was in the cask. Good aroma. Caramel, chocolate, slight citrusy (orange / lime). Hazed orangy brown color, good head & lace. Sweet flavor, Like aroma but, more intense. Medium body, smooth mouthfeel, sweet finish. Very nice version of this beer.

UPDATED: JAN 19, 2009 Dark brown with a floral, hoppy nose. The flavor is burnt toast and followed by a healthy dose of bitter hops. Hides the alcohol pretty well, but as it warms up you can start tasting it. (And feeling it) Didn’t change any numbers, but damn, I love this beer!

the hop flavor is subdued enough to allow the rich chocolate malt to come out but assertive enough to add lots of flavor and character,

Overall: now more of a brown ale than an india brown ale

UPDATED: AUG 26, 2007 Draught. Pours brown with a moderate head. Aroma is IIPA-like, strongly hopped with a strong malt backbone. Flavor is similar. There are bits of grapefruit and pine in the hops, and lots of caramel and some grain in the malt. Despite being billed (and described by others) as a highly-hopped brown ale, it really seemed like basically a more-brown IIPA to me. Similar in style to Terrapin’s other fine IIPAs, just with more caramel basically. Pretty good on the whole.
