3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
12 oz bottle into a pint glass.
A: Pours a dark brown color. Somewhat typical of most amber ales, the head has a one finger offwhite shade with a wonderful creaminess to it. It fades away to a thin collar fairly quick, but leaves nice sheets of lacing down the glass.
S: This one is somewhat intriguing, to say the least. The first thing I note is aged piny hops along side a large caramel backbone. When given a chance to open up, the aroma shifts slightly toward vanilla, toffee, oak, and chocolate. Hints of booze also appear.
T: At first, mild hints of hops hit the palate...and when I mean mild, I mean nearly non-existent to my hop-discerning palate. The finish is fairly sweet vanilla mixed with some toffee. To me, the general flavor profile is hard to identify - it comes across as a weird, almost musty caramel sweetness. There’s too much flavor muddling here for me to give a great score.
M: I like the creaminess of the texture a lot. It’s a bit thin, and oaky tannins boost its drinkability at the cost of some softness. Carbonation is a touch low.
O: Not bad, just strange. The absolute closest comparison I can make to this is a 4-month old bottle of Nugget Nectar crossed with Oaked Arrogant Bastard. I wouldn’t seek this out again, but I wouldn’t refuse it, either.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Not a big boost of oak in the aroma and a very balanced oak hoppy taste with a thick brown appearance and growing finish.

2012 vintage, 12oz bottle poured into a tulip glass. Pours amber with a small light head. Nose is pine, oak, caramel sweetness, fruit, great aromas. Taste is not as bitter and hoppy as I expected. Very we’ll balanced.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Pours a clear and bright dark ruby body with a small fizzy beige head that fell to a wispy partial covering. The nose is full of resiny hops with a much heavier oak character than I was expecting. There’s a really hefty sweet malt base as well. The flavor is pretty intense, the resiny hops, heavy caramel, and oak fight for dominance. The sweetness and bitterness express themselves up front, leaving the raw oak to take over on the finish. The flavor is pretty good, but the heaviness of it doesn’t make it especially drinkable. Thick and chewy with fizzy carbonation, lingering sticky finish. Decent enough, but not something I’d go back and buy more of to drink regularly.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Very dark, muddy, brownish color with a thin beige head. Decent lacing. Aroma of wood, vanilla, caramel, spice, and dark fruit. Boozy, woody, and dark fruity tasting with a mild bitterness. Medium-full bodied, kind of syrupy, very little carbonation left. Some dryness.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
12oz bottle from Proof bottle shop. Brown pour with a thin khaki head. Aroma is caramel, the vanilla, and pine. Tastes are resiny citrus, toasted malts, oak. Less of the vanilla than I would have thought from the aroma. Nice sipper.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle. Super dark red and nearly opaque, this has barely any head. The aroma is an assault on the olfactory senses, rich with dark fruit and alcohol. After that promise, this turns out to be a relatively easy drinker. It still has some amazingly rich flavors here, rich malts, raisin, merlot, vanilla, stained oak. Impossibly complex, yet improbably quaffable. Exceptional. (#5010, 5/7/2013)

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle. heavy malt aromas of dark bread, roasted and caramel, moderate hop note of cooked orange, light leather for the yeast, with raisin, wood, brown sugar and alcohol in the background. Head is tiny, frothy, off-white with some slippery lacing and is almost fully diminishing. Color is dark red/brown. Flavor starts moderately to heavily sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes moderately sweet, lightly acidic and has a long bitterness at the end. Palate is medium t full, creamy with a soft carbonation and is moderately alcoholic and chewy in the finish. This beer leans more towards a Barley Wine than a DIPA, with that said this is one tasty beer.
