COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Like a mad scientist Spike starts with Big Hoppy Monster, Terrapinís Imperial Red Ale, and its tantalizing hop aroma and enormous malt backbone. As if that if that wasnít enough flavor for one beer, Spike ages it w/ French oak spirals for two months. The touch of toasted vanilla from the oak combines with the mammoth hop aroma and rich maltyness of the beer to create a complex flavor experience thatís electrifying!

Dark red with a thick off white head. Aroma is vanilla with some resin pine hops. Flavor is a big hit of vanilla oak followed by a bit of resinous hops. Very mellow finish with a touch of sweet malt.

12 oz bottle, compliments of Sutree, poured into a Sam perfect pint. Beautiful blood orange color with thin off white head which almost completely disappears and leave virtually no lacing. Scent of oak, gingerbread cookies and hops. Some booziness on the nose. Initial flavor is oak which melts away into resiny hops and mellow boozy finish. Medium/ light on the palate. I expected a thicker more oily coating on the tongue. Although this is a great beer, I think that I was just expecting a bit more complexity.

Bottle in celebration of Roger Ebertís life (perhaps the first of several bottles this week). Nose explodes with fresh hops, heavy pine with some resin, bright citric accents, heavily caramel, some dough, a little dank. Some etoh seeping out, faint spice, faint vanilla, but otherwise minimal barrel. Pours a hazy amber-brown with a clingy tan head. Strong bitterness but balanced by strong sweetness, dripping with leafy hops and dull resin. Strips the palate a little bit, but strong caramel with dankness and pine, very strong alcohol heft but no burn, and despite the slight added depression, the alcohol presence doesnít drag everything else down, and some of the citric notes shine through brightly. Still, a bit of muddle. Full body.

12 oz. bottle shared by drsordr. Pours a hazy amber color with a small yellow beige head. The aroma is more like a barley wine with sweet malts, wood and vanilla over some fruits and floral hops. The flavor has oak, caramel, vanilla, fruits with the hops only adding bitterness. Not bad, but I was expecting more.

Pours a nice amber red color. Smells of caramel with hop notes. The taste is caramel, citrus, hops, and I can taste notes of the oak in the after taste. Very gerthy but very tasty.

Bottle from Alex. Copper colored pour with a khaki head. Very, very sweet aroma. Lots of caramel and brown sugar. Some pineapple, grapefruit, oak, and vanilla. A touch of booze on the nose as well. The flavor is quite sweet, but there is also a nice fruit note to it. Pineapple and grapefruit bite, light pine, and a fair amount of oak. Heavy doses of caramel and brown sugar sweetness, too.

Bottle pour cloudy amber with brown hues. Nose mostly malty barleywine. Taste some initial tannin from the wood, then bitterness and sweet malt. Seems that the hops only add bitterness, no aroma or flavor.

Small off white head thats short lived, minimal lace. Hazy, chunky, amber colored brew. Nose of sweet malts and light wood, caramel. Body is med/full, fairly flat carbonation, lil oily. Some juicy hop notes, citrus, sweet malts, caramel and a hint of wood. Lightly sweet finish is toasty with a little booze warmth. Bottle procured from statelineliqiors in Elkton Merlind.

On tap at Meehanís Public House. I assumed that I was going to enjoy a regular Big Hoppy Monster, but the first sip suggested otherwise. The hoppiness was there, but the oak notes blew me away. Very tasty. Appearance is a dark mahogany, very little head. Alcohol is not well hidden and might just be a little too forward. Overall, a tasty treat but wouldnít travel for the opportunity.
