Sweet aroma, Woody, vanilla, toffee, orange, rye. Not a strong aroma though. Brownish orange color, small head that faded quickly. Bitter sweet flavor, rye bite still there, then the oak mellows. Some citrusy notes dart around. Little honey. Thick body, oily creamy mouthfeel, bitter finish. Very nice beer to sip, the way the rye and oak play together adds another layer to a beer I already enjoyed. aracauna (2381), Georgia, USA

This must not have been whisky barrel aged, because there are no notes of liquor in the aroma. There’s a nice vanilla from the oak and the hops have aged out a little, but there’s a honey to the malt that made this a surprisingly drinkable beer. beerguy101 (3885), Newark, California, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jun 9, 2008 On tap at the Brick Store. This Imperial IPA pours a medium amber color. Small sized white foamy head, with good lacing and nice retention. The aroma is oak, hops and malts. A medium to full bodied Imperial IPA. The malts are caramel and sweet, touch of oak and vanilla. Hops are piney and grapefruity. Hints of oak and a touch or vanilla. Those flavors really balance the hop bitterness. Good carbonation. The barrel aging really adds a nice dimension to this beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter with some vanilla at the finish. KieferUGA (461), Atlanta, Georgia, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jun 8, 2008 Draft at Brick Store Pub. Ruby color with a one finger, off white head. Aroma of citrus hops, peaches, and honeysuckle. Sweet flavor, with vanilla leading the way. As the beer warms up, the piney flavors come out. The alcohol stays in the background and doesn’t overpower. Bready malt finish. kp (8399), Woodstock, Georgia, USA

Source: Brick Store Pub
Appearance: clear amber, frothy off white head, solid patterned lace,
Aroma: sweet pine and crystal malt aroma, touch of fruityness, oak starts off light and builds pull in the vanilla with it and takes over the sweet pine and crystal,
Body: creamy body,
Flavor: big oak and malt flavor, lots of earthy oak balances the sweetness of the base beer, the sweet pine breaks through for a while, vanilla adds more complexity than sweetness, bitterness adds balance but stays out of the way of the complex flavors, sweet crystal malt shows back up towards the bottom of the pint,
Overall: sweet oak and pine

picking up a lot more of the fruityness and pine of the base beer with the oak coming later, I can see where people say it is not too oaky, on this keg, for the first third of the pint,

been drinking this here for the past few days and noticing a daily fluxuation in the level or oak, depending on your desired level of oak it will be perfect eventually,

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jun 2, 2008 On tap at The Midway. Poured a nice copper color. Aroma of grapes and vanilla. The oak comes through on first sip with a bit of a wood and nut flavor. This gives way to a smooth malt mid palate and finally a piney hop finish with some resin and sweetness. Pretty interesting aroma and evolving palate. Nice job by these guys. gunhaver (1025), Tampa, Florida, USA

Pours a dark copper color, with a thick foamy white head, with a shitload of lacing. Some oak notes in the nose, oat, vanilla, and oily hops. Flavors of honey, citrus, velvety smooth hops, pine, and a caramel finish. Not too dissimilar from the regular Hop Squared, but good. Maintains a fine balance. amc3000 (46), houston, Texas, USA

this version has all the great heavy rye and hop goodness of the regular rye squared, now just add a subtle taste of the woody oak with vanilla and you enjoy it even more.
