COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Like a mad scientist Spike starts with Big Hoppy Monster, Terrapinís Imperial Red Ale, and its tantalizing hop aroma and enormous malt backbone. As if that if that wasnít enough flavor for one beer, Spike ages it w/ French oak spirals for two months. The touch of toasted vanilla from the oak combines with the mammoth hop aroma and rich maltyness of the beer to create a complex flavor experience thatís electrifying!

Location/Date:Bottle on December 5th, 2012.

Appearance: Pours an opaque maroon.
Aroma: Aroma of caramel, vanilla from the oak.
Taste: Medium bitterness, light pine, lots of caramel, faint vanilla.
Palate:Medium body, slightly slick, lingering aftertaste.

Summary: A tasty beer, but I think I might prefer the regular non-aged verison with more hop punch.

Pours out an attractive deep ruby color with a small tan head. Aroma is of earthy wood chips, oak, caramel, citrus hops, and some pine, with light sticky malts and some vanilla. Taste is complex, with a full bodied mouthfeel. Malty caramel, oak, citrus hops, sticky alcohol, lots of wood and some warming on the end. Well done.

From the 12oz bottle. Pours a muddy brown with a thin off white head. Citrus hops and oak vanilla notes in aroma. Big malt body with a smooth vanilla oak taste. Oak cuts the big citrus hop bite and gives this a real nice big body, easy drinking smoothness. Damn nice brew.

12 oz bottle from Dean, thanks brah. Poured a muddy medium brown body with a smaller light beige head that is foamy with some spotty lace. Aroma of oak, wooden barrel, vanilla, caramel, toast, orange slices, grapefruit, molasses, bitter earthiness. Fuller bodied with average to strong carbonation and just the slightest hint of heat towards the end of the swwallow, chewy and full overall. Flavor of caramel, molasses, grapefruits, oak, toast, hint of choclate, bread, corn syrup. Good stuff, a bit thick but very nice.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Oak Tree, 12/1/12

Aroma: The nose has definite a wood presence, some earth, a little pine, fruit, and just a little vanilla
Appearance: It pours a murky dark reddish-brown color with a small beige head and spotty lacework
Flavor: The hops come out more in the flavor. It tastes a little sweet, and has a nice, but not super bitter hop presence. Thereís some wood there too, but not as much as the nose suggested.
Palate: The body is medium, it feels a touch sticky, with a soft carbonation, and a dry, woody finish
Overall Impression: The wood treatment worked nicely here. I have to say, it has been awhile since I have had a Big Hoppy Monster, so I didnít really have a great comparison in my head for the non-oaked version, but I enjoyed this version.

Bottle from Total Wine & More in McLean, VA. Reddish-amber pour with a small white head. Big hop and caramel malt, and over the top of that is sweet vanilla and wood. Another winner from Terrapin.

12oz bottle poured into glass. I was intrigued to try this since itís oak aged but Iíve never really been too keen on red ales, so I was a bit skeptical on whether or not Iíd like this one. The aroma was pretty impressive, with big hints of hops and woody notes, but the flavor/boozyness was just a little too much for me to swallow. The malts just dominated the entire beer, but then again some people like that.
