Bottle. Pours a clear deep amber with a light brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of pine hops with a hint of grapefruit with a bit of backing sweet grain and oakiness. Flavor has much more sweet grain with a hint of vanilla and oakiness with a good amount of bitter pine in the finish.

3.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Ar: Medium-dark caramel, some orange rind, clean booze.
Ap: Deep red - hazy - medium-small beige head with medium-low retention - leaves a thin ring and spotty covering of foam.
T: Burnt caramel and grapefruit rind, medium sweetness - strong citrus and sticky caramel - clean alcohol, vanilla, and some tannin - high bitterness.
P: Medium body with medium-high carbonation - finish is dry.
O: A big and caramel-laden hoppy beer - malt flavors are firmly caramel, with a roast accent - hop flavors still shine through boldly.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Extremely interesting brew. The malt backbone almost seems like it is at the forefront. The hops are tantilizing. The mix of vanilla with an Imperial Red is truly unique and leaves a lingering taste that is unmatched and for that this beer gets kudos.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Location/Date:Bottle on December 5th, 2012.
Appearance: Pours an opaque maroon.
Aroma: Aroma of caramel, vanilla from the oak.
Taste: Medium bitterness, light pine, lots of caramel, faint vanilla.
Palate:Medium body, slightly slick, lingering aftertaste.
Summary: A tasty beer, but I think I might prefer the regular non-aged verison with more hop punch.

Pours out an attractive deep ruby color with a small tan head. Aroma is of earthy wood chips, oak, caramel, citrus hops, and some pine, with light sticky malts and some vanilla. Taste is complex, with a full bodied mouthfeel. Malty caramel, oak, citrus hops, sticky alcohol, lots of wood and some warming on the end. Well done.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
From the 12oz bottle. Pours a muddy brown with a thin off white head. Citrus hops and oak vanilla notes in aroma. Big malt body with a smooth vanilla oak taste. Oak cuts the big citrus hop bite and gives this a real nice big body, easy drinking smoothness. Damn nice brew.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz bottle from Dean, thanks brah. Poured a muddy medium brown body with a smaller light beige head that is foamy with some spotty lace. Aroma of oak, wooden barrel, vanilla, caramel, toast, orange slices, grapefruit, molasses, bitter earthiness. Fuller bodied with average to strong carbonation and just the slightest hint of heat towards the end of the swwallow, chewy and full overall. Flavor of caramel, molasses, grapefruits, oak, toast, hint of choclate, bread, corn syrup. Good stuff, a bit thick but very nice.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Location: 12 oz bottle from Oak Tree, 12/1/12
Aroma: The nose has definite a wood presence, some earth, a little pine, fruit, and just a little vanilla
Appearance: It pours a murky dark reddish-brown color with a small beige head and spotty lacework
Flavor: The hops come out more in the flavor. It tastes a little sweet, and has a nice, but not super bitter hop presence. There’s some wood there too, but not as much as the nose suggested.
Palate: The body is medium, it feels a touch sticky, with a soft carbonation, and a dry, woody finish
The wood treatment worked nicely here. I have to say, it has been awhile since I have had a Big Hoppy Monster, so I didn’t really have a great comparison in my head for the non-oaked version, but I enjoyed this version.

Bottle from Total Wine & More in McLean, VA. Reddish-amber pour with a small white head. Big hop and caramel malt, and over the top of that is sweet vanilla and wood. Another winner from Terrapin.
