Like a mad scientist Spike starts with Big Hoppy Monster, Terrapinís Imperial Red Ale, and its tantalizing hop aroma and enormous malt backbone. As if that if that wasnít enough flavor for one beer, Spike ages it w/ French oak spirals for two months. The touch of toasted vanilla from the oak combines with the mammoth hop aroma and rich maltyness of the beer to create a complex flavor experience thatís electrifying!

Bottle from Total Wine & More in McLean, VA. Reddish-amber pour with a small white head. Big hop and caramel malt, and over the top of that is sweet vanilla and wood. Another winner from Terrapin.

UPDATED: DEC 1, 2012 Aroma of sticky resin, caramel, pine and slight grapefruit. Pours red with a big sticky head. Taste is strong with grapefruit, pine resin, brown sugar and a slight alcohol sting. Very yummy.

12oz bottle poured into glass. I was intrigued to try this since itís oak aged but Iíve never really been too keen on red ales, so I was a bit skeptical on whether or not Iíd like this one. The aroma was pretty impressive, with big hints of hops and woody notes, but the flavor/boozyness was just a little too much for me to swallow. The malts just dominated the entire beer, but then again some people like that.

On tap. Nearly opaque, deep copper-brown with a half inch of foam. Light toasted oak aroma with some toffee. Flavors of vanilla, chocolate, toffee, toast, peppery oak and light whiskey. Medium-heavy body is fairly smooth, lightly sticky, but well-dried by the big toasted oak finish.

Really nice beer. I feel like the oak aging smoothed out some of the hops but it was still hoptastic. I'd like to try the regular BHM to compare. Terrapin can do no wrong in my book. - check out more at www.beeriam.com

Bottle shared by beerpig317. Poured clear dark copper color with an average frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with good lacing. Moderate to heavy hop, vanilla wood and earthy aroma. Medium to full body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet wood finish of moderate to long duration. My expectations where exceeded.
