COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Double the malt, double the hops, and double the flavor of the original Rye Pale Ale recipe. (Hence the name Rye Squared.) With its mammoth hop aroma, bitterness and flavor, this beer is not for the faint at heart. The Rye Squared clocks in at a hefty 8.5% ABV so double your pleasure and double your fun because Terrapin went a little crazy with this one! The first keg of Rye Squared went on tap at Tasty World in Athens on Monday April 25th 2005. A special thank you goes out to the newly formed Terrapin Keg Killers. We were told that Tasty World would put the Rye Squared on as soon as they finished off a keg of a "Select" beer they had on tap. When the Terrapin Keg Killers heard about this they went to Tasty world and finished off that other keg in record time. By 10pm on Monday they were enjoying the fruits of their labor when the first ever Rye Squared keg went online. Malt: 2-row pale, Munich, Malted Rye, Bisuit Malt, Honey Malt. Hops: Amarillo, Cascade, East Kent Goldings, Fuggle, Magnum

Poured into a Duvel tulip from a bottle dated Vintage 2011.

A: Dark slightly hazy amber with a thin light tan head that maintains lacing and a coating on top.

S: Mostly rye with a malt sweetness that comes through and reminds me of a barley wine. Dark fruits and brown sugar on the nose as well, with slight medicinal aromas.

T: Slight rye, with a malt sweetness coming through, the beer finishes with a slight citrus bitterness and some alcohol coming through. Decent.

M: Full bodied with light carbonation.

O: Interesting, more like a barleywine than anything else I could compare it to. I wouldn’t seek this out again, but it’s worth the try.

12 oz bottle, Christmas present ! Cloudy orange, highly carbonated with some minor sediment. Continues the totally unplanned "ugly looking beer" parade. Sweet caramel malt, biscuit, rye, amarillo hops in the aroma. Sweet, biscuit, rye dominate the taste; butterscotch; there’s some hop presence from cascade and amarillo, but not much and it’s not bitter. Thick, rich, heavy body but not overwhelming. It’s pretty nicely balanced; maybe a tad too sweet but otherwise very enjoyable.

(12oz bottle from drowland). Pours a clear orange-copper color with thin off-white head. Carbonation is quite active. Aroma is syrup, peppery spice, hard candy. Taste is syrupy sweet with some bitterness and pepper. Full bodied with a sticky texture. Ok.

L’arôme ressemble beaucoup à la Dugana d’Avery mais en plus épicé. Au goût ce qui la démarque, c’est la finale poivrée dans l’amertume.

Pours orange with small off-white fizz. Smells hopped, spicy, and somewhat malted. Tastes of hop bitterness and rye spiciness with a touch of sweetness behind it all. Full-bodied with a smooth texture and average mouth-carbonation, Terrapin Rye Squared finishes with a duality of rye spiciness and rye sweetness.

A: Rich copper-amber body. Moderate off white head which leaves behind moderate levels of lacing. S: Some piney/earthy hops. Lots of sweet malt shine though. Some booze. T: More of the same, the hops were rather dull and muted. Drowned out by syrupy over-sweet malt. Rye was not perceptible. Alcohol was, however. M: Thick. Syrupy. D: Eh. Was expecting better. The beer’s balance is tipped too far to the malt side of things.

2010 bottle. Pours cloudy amber w/ little off-white head and spotty, short-lived lacing. Arima is heavy w/ caramel and candy; some grain, booze and honey. Smells do last. Mouthfeel is syrupy w/ low carbonation, full and smooth. Flavor is butterscotch primarily. On warming rye, pastry, Apple cider comes through. Not much hop character. It may be the age killed the hoppiness...not sure. A big brew, and pretty good, but for an IIPA the lack of hops was a let down.

Bomber thanks to Mr. Bishop in a trade from tenn. Poured amber orange and clear. 3 finger dissipating off white head. Smells like amber with spices. Tastes like a clean amber probably cause of the the extra pale malts. A great hop round background to make it a great big epic pale ale. Overall 7.5 of 10.
