3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12oz bottle via variety pack. Pours black with a finger of creamy tan head. Aroma is a little odd. Notes of milk chocolate, over ripened grapefruit, and orange juice from concentrate. Taste is better then the aroma. Notes of dark malt and dark chocolate up front, followed by a big hit of bitter orange and pine, and finishes with roasted malts and caramel.

3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Deep dark brown coloured body with a very soapy, large, four centimetre tall light brown head. Aroma of fresh citrus and piney hops with a good deal of roasted malt, coffee and a bit of alcohol - nice and fragrant, mostly from the hops. Medium-bodied; Assertive grassy and citrus-based hops with a good and relatively smooth roasted malt backbone and a bit of earth coming through near the finish. Aftertaste is very one-dimensional with the hops battling through the roasted malt, but since this is more hop-heavy, the balance is a bit off. Overall, a decent Black IPA, not stellar, but showing more hops than malt and seems a tad watery near the finish. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Washington (Foggy Bottom - I Street), DC on 16-October-2014 for US$2,49 sampled at home in Washington on 11-November-2014.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Pours clear reddish black, medium tan head, good lacing. Aroma is roasty, chocolate, light pine. Flavor is medium sweet, roasty, chocolate, some pine and citrus, but more of a stout than an IPA on the nose and mouth. Light-medium body overall. A bit of an anachronism for me.

Very good Black IPA. Not the best Iíve ever had but still a real good showing from Terrapin. This brewer is one of the best.

Bottle. Black with a tan head. Dark malts with light smooth chocolate on the taste. Piney hops up front with citrus on the finish and prickly bitterness. Smooth, on the thin side, yet semi-rich at times. Good stuff.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
more subdued and less fresh hop aroma and flavor than i was hoping for, though still nice, and better than average...but far from elite. Had it side by side with Hop in the Dark and Sublimely Self Righteous and it got itís southern ass thoroughly kicked. More complex and less roasted malt tones than usually found in a black ipa. Again, nice, but the bitter hops needed to be more aromatic and assertive."

12 oz bottle of Captín Krunkles Black IPA poured black and opaque with a good size, durable tan head that left splotchy lacing.
Aroma; pronounced hops with faint malts. Nonetheless, appealing.
Flavor: more balanced. Unlike many black IPA;s, IMO, this one successfully integrates the substantial hop load with a substantial amount of medium and dark malts. Its success is due, I suspect, to not going overboard with the ingrediants. Terrapin has also done a fine job of matching the malts to the hops.
