Legend had is Captín Krunkles is the most feared pirate on the high seas. No one has seen him, his ship, or the great beer his band of pirates drinks has lived to tell about it. Until now. Made with a bombardment of hops to defeat your tastebuds in battle and all the black malt you can stand before walking the plank, this Black I.P.A. will make it worth going down with the ship.

not sure about the side project but this is an interesting IPA in this new dark style. More smoke and spice than others though the underlying IPA is nothing special. Dark brown with nice lacing.

22 oz bomber. Pours a dark black cola with a foamy medium sized light brown head. Aroma of lightly roasted malts, faint pine and hops. Taste of roasted malts, light pine, hops and a hint of citrus.

Tried on tap the other day - rating is a bomber from fermentation lounge. Dark brown pour with a frothy mocha head and sheets of lace. Aroma is a pleasant subtle mix of pine, floral, citrus, roasted malt and cocoa. Flavors are citrus hop ipa up front followed by earthy roasted malts and wood. Smokey vibe to it - in a good way. Lively medium texture. Astringent resiny bitterness in the long finish. Kind of comes off as two different beers at once. Not sure if thatís what the black ipa style is about. If it is, well played.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a Spaten Mug. This brew poured a dark brown (almost competely black) with a one finger tan head. The aroma of this brew was piney. The taste of this was a very smooth earthy flavor that intensified upon swallowing. The hops were very subtle and almost missed. It maintained evident lacing throughout. Overall this was a very nice brew that is easy to drink while still maintaining an earthy flavor. With that said, I would have enjoyed it much more if there was some balance to the earthy flavor. This was still quite good for a Black IPA.

22 oz bottle. Dark brown with a frothy beige haze. Nose is grapefruit, pine, chocolate and coffee; odd but not bad. Medium body with a tingle. Taste is all kinds of bitter with citrus peel, Bakers chocolate, espresso and lime. Dry, black licorice finish.

Bomber from Tylerís Bottle Shop, Carrboro. With more and more company, itís harder to make an impression in this style, and some of the underwhelming variants just make me want a regular olí IPA. Terrapin comes close to the mark here but doesnít quite reach the level of Stone, which is the benchmark for me. Nice oily dark brown pour with plenty of carbonation and a moderate head. Nose of pumpernickel and slight citrus, resinous hops. Mouthfeel is a tad too thin for me. The taste is a bit earthy, with dark bready malts reminding me of good deli. But then the hops come on fairly strong and make things a bit clashing. In some ways this is fun, like pinball in your mouth. But in other ways, I felt disappointed that there wasnít better integration of the many flavors going on. Still enjoyable, as evidenced by the solid rating. But not somethign Iíd go out of my way to have again.

Bottle, poured black with a large, soapy beige head. Nose has big notes of pine and citrus with secondary notes of chocolate an toasted malt. Medium body with a smooth mouth feel and ample carbonation. Flavor starts with piny citric hops which lead to some roasted dark malt notes. Pretty good amount of bitterness throughout this beer. Finishes toasted with more bitterness.

Tried both on tap and in bottle. The tap version had a much more pungent dry hopped aroma. Unfortunately this was lacking in the bottle. Medium body and bitterness with roasted undertones. It was definitely better on tap, but the bottle wasnít bad.

22oz bottle. Poured a brown color with an averaged sized off white head. Lacing left on the glass. Aromas of floral hops, a little earthy, pine, and light chocolate. Tastes of pine, floral, chocolate, and earthy.

Dark, clear ruby brown. Lightly sweet, woody, a little raisin. Maybe a lottle more light bodied that I was expectig. Wood, acidic finish. Boozy bite. Fermentation Lounge.
