COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Legend had is Captín Krunkles is the most feared pirate on the high seas. No one has seen him, his ship, or the great beer his band of pirates drinks has lived to tell about it. Until now. Made with a bombardment of hops to defeat your tastebuds in battle and all the black malt you can stand before walking the plank, this Black I.P.A. will make it worth going down with the ship.

22oz bottle A- Pours a dark black color with a large tan head that has excellent lacing and retention. Looks great in the glass. S- The aroma is largely comprised of piney hop resins with very faint roasted malts. Smells great, canít wait to try it! T- The taste like the aroma has some faint roasted malts in the background with the hops clearly stealing the show in this one creating a nice lingering bitterness that leaves you craving the next sip. M- The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a perfect amount of carbonation. D- Overall, this is probably my favorite Side Project beer to date. I really enjoyed it. Canít wait to try the next new release from Terrapin!

draft @ redlight redlight. Roasted coffee and bitter chocolate on the nose with traces of vanilla. Pours black with an off white head. Roasted malts and bitter chocolate with coffee flavors and piney hops with a sticky resinous finish. Pretty solid!

22oz bottle, courtesy of Mario. Thanks, dude! Pours a dark, cola-brown color; high clarity; small-bubbled, very light tan head, nicely creamy, with solid retention and lacing that sticks; attractive pour. Kind of a muted aroma, showing piney and mineral-like bitterness, and a watery roasted / ashy malt presence; very nondescript, slightly burnt, barely there. Medium to M-F body; moderately high carbonation for what weíre working with here; hints of warming, vinous / red-fruit alcohol presence; slightly rough around the edges; overcarbonated, almost fizzy presence in the mouth; medium amounts of burnt / roasted malts, moderate, non-resiny piney and mineral bitterness, but just very little here in terms of nuance or well-presented hop character; the malt core is simply blah. Lasting, basic mineral bitterness, touches of charred malts.

Bottle from Craft. Pours deep black with 2-finger tan head. Big piney hop nose matched by dark malt and chocolate. Tastes resiny hoppy up front, with the dark malt catching up nanoseconds later. Gets ever so s;ightly sweet as it warms, stays complex, and stays very malty. I still cannot totally resolve this style, as the hops never seem to meld as well with dark malt as caramel or pale malts, but this one was a fine example of the style.

VOLUME 10. 22oz bottle, foil wrapped. Pours jet black, light tan head. OMG, the aroma. Woody spruce hops, loads of hops. A touch of smoke, peat, and burnt grains. Flavor is a bit of burnt grains, light bacon, and bold hop bitterness. A little smoke. Very nice roast, even better bitterness. Nice char, wood, and pine. Loads of hops. Very yum, slightly Krunk.
Rating 2600.

Bottle. Dark, thin and black with a thick foamy head. Aroma of citrus hops and chalky powdered cocoa. Flavor is more of the powdered cocoa with a strong hop backbone. Very nice brew. One of my favorites of the Side Project series.

Wow reading through the reviews and the experiences and descriptions are all over the place. I got a bit of pine and bubblegum aroma. The flavor is where the black part of this really came out. Mid palate had a lot of roasty thick malt flavors and the texture was slightly gritty like cocoa. The finish had a bit of citrus and some pine again. One of the more entertaining side projects. Glad they hit a good one with version 10.

22 oz. bottle as an extra in a trade with JCB- thanks again, Jason! Pours a dark opaque brown, basically black, with a tan head that leaves some soapy lacing in the glass. Aroma of earthy hops, dark roasted malts, dirt, pine, wood, grass, and toasted brown sugar. Flavor of earthy hops, dark roasted malts, pine resin, citrus, grass, charred wood, earthy notes, dust, dark chocolate, and just a little coffee. Finishes roasty and bitter. Medium-bodied, with average carbonation and a dirty mouthfeel. Not a typical IPA, and certainly worth a try.
