COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Legend had is Captín Krunkles is the most feared pirate on the high seas. No one has seen him, his ship, or the great beer his band of pirates drinks has lived to tell about it. Until now. Made with a bombardment of hops to defeat your tastebuds in battle and all the black malt you can stand before walking the plank, this Black I.P.A. will make it worth going down with the ship.

Dark beer out of the bottle with puffed wheat and burnt grains nose. Dark sugar sweetness with roasted wheat, toasted white bread, raisens and roast apple fruitiness. Very nice beer.

(22oz bottle thanks to boomer0813) espresso brown pour, soapy khaki bubbles with nice lacing. Nose of milk chocolate, graham cracker, vanilla, biscuit, just delicious. Taste of fudge/cocoa, chocolate malt, light citrus, really easy to drink! Oily body and creamy as hell.

Tasted many moons ago. Kind of going on memory here, but I did have the beer many times. Probably the best black IPA that Iíve ever had. Still that isnít saying a whole lot. There arenít many Black IPAs out there yet. And while good, this beer category as a whole needs some work. Most examples are just fair at best. Captín is better than most. Decent balance between the black malts and the super amped up hops. Harmony in flavor it does not have however. There is some clashing going on. Maybe I just havenít gotten used to this style yet.

Pours black with a creamy mocha colored head. Nose is citrus, piny hops and roasted chocolate malts. Sweet chocolate and cocoa in the palate and a nice bitter finish. Pretty awesome black IPA.

Appearance: black with little than no head. Bubbly cappuccino collar. Swirls with a smidge of lace than gives up the ghost once more.
Nose: hops, bakers chocolate, roasted cacao beans. Wood and vanilla bean burnt, black, and toasty. Dried cherries. Subtle hint of greenness pervades and weaves; hop cones.
Palate: clean up front than explodes atop my tongue and rushes down my throat to make merry in my tummy. Complex is an understatement, and yet he manages to be amazingly drinkable. Burnt wood, spice, and dried rye seeds in the back suck moisture from my tongue. Apple, pear, peach, and plum skins for a tickle of sweetness before quickly giving way to tart tannic skin delights. Medium weight with a full mouthfeel. Intense flavors. Almonds, roasted please and hold the sugars. Long refreshing dried hop cone bitterness tinges breathe and pervades her burnt bitter roastyness in harmonious titillation.
Final Thoughts: here we have one of the newest beer categories that came about through brewerís whim and fanciful disregard for brewing parameters. Flavor first, quickly followed by set styles, then enhanced and expanded upon with imagination and flair. The India Black Ale or Black IPA is one such style and Captín Krunkles went above and beyond pleasing this flavorholic.

Bottle and served in my other NB Worthy glass: Pours a deep cola brown turning near black topped by a big assed frothy tan head that left excellent lacing, beautiful brew. The aroma has notes of charred, nutty, caramel, coffee, and biscuity malts thrown around by some piney resiny and a touch of grassy noble hops too. I found a bit of anise, leather, tar, and bubblegum too. The taste is well balanced between the sweet and astrengent malts versus the snappy and spicy hops. Plenty of coffeeish and bakers dark chocolate too. The mouth feel is sprite and oily, a bit chalky but easily drinkable. A top notch Dark Cascadian Black India not quite so pale Ale. Mikey Likey damn it. deal. Next to Beer Here Dark Hops, the 2nd best of new genre I have had.

My 10th black IPA... glad to knock out this style! 12/8/10. Bomber. Opaque black pour, some red on the edges when held to the light, under a thick brown head that lasts with a few millimeters. Strong sour hop presence with plenty of pine, coffee, and a hint of rubbing alcohol. Malty and sweet roasty flavor that leans so much on the malty and roasty side that it lends itself to almost being a hoppy stout/impy stout. Still, quite tasty.

Dark pour with a thin bubbly brown head. The aroma has a good mix of dark malts, chocolate, and hops mashed together. The flavor leans more towards the hops, but still remains sweet enough to taste the chocolate and malts as well. One great beer!!
