Legend had is Captín Krunkles is the most feared pirate on the high seas. No one has seen him, his ship, or the great beer his band of pirates drinks has lived to tell about it. Until now. Made with a bombardment of hops to defeat your tastebuds in battle and all the black malt you can stand before walking the plank, this Black I.P.A. will make it worth going down with the ship.

(22oz bottle) Black body and a medium, creamy chocolate head. Smooth roasted malt aroma, lightly smoky, dark chocolate, espresso. The hops that werenít present in the aroma come through in the taste: at first in the front along with light acidity, fading on the way back with a roasted chocolate finish, and the hops coming back in the after taste. Floral and citrus notes. Medium- to full-bodied with lots of lace left on the glass.

Had this while camping at BCTC this year. Pours a clear brown with ruby highlights and a thin beige head. Hoppy aromas, malty brewhouse, chocolate and toffee. Big chocolate and earthy malt, smooth. Light tobacco. Long slow chocolate and a hoppy bitter finish.

Poured a black color with a cinnamon colored pillowy head that produced some lacing. This is a heavily malted and hoped beer with plenty of coffee, roasted malt, caramel, and a hint of herb. The mouthfeel is heavy with a sweet forward roast coffee bean flavor initially with a crisp bitterness and hop on finish.

22 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown to black body with a small fizzy light brown head. Nice roast and coffee notes mingling with moderate citrusy and bright hops. The flavor is a great balance between the darker malts and the bright citrusy hops. Some nice lingering coffee notes. The citrus and coffee together really complement each other, this makes me want a cup of strong espresso. Medium bodied with nice fizzy carbonation. The carbonation really emphasizes the hops nicely. Pretty good beer!

20100811 Bomber from turdferguson, thanks Sam. Very dark chocolate color, nearly black, with loose froth of large caviar sized bubbles in a rich tan color. The head reminds me of a pancake on the griddle. Ha! Aroma is exceedingly hoppy with lots of resinous pine, some ginger, cardamom, and malted milk. Odd, but inviting, and Iím compelled to dig in with big swigs. Body is medium-light with nicely done carbonation that is even and fine, slight sweetness comes across as a citrusy candy and leaves a satisfying smack on the back of the palate. Thereís a chocolaty flavor, too. Bitterness comes on late and is long lingering, mostly resinous. Some alcohol notes come on in aroma and on palate, especially with temp, and is kind of let down for me although I suppose itís not all that surprising in an IPA. Overall though, I quite liked this beer.

Pours dark brown with a light brown head. Smells of resiny hops, roasty, spicy. Tastes of pepper, bitter, roasty, some coffee, chocolate on the finish.

on draft at cap ale DT. black pour with a beige head going toward brown. roasty malt nose balanced with piney hops with a bit of a pineapple thing happening too. similar flavor profile: roast first, hops very strong but coming in second to the malts. this black IPA definitely tends toward the interpretation of the style that accentuates the roasted malts rather than just using them/it just for coloring, which I dig, but if thatís not what youíre expecting, be prepared.
