Legend had is Captín Krunkles is the most feared pirate on the high seas. No one has seen him, his ship, or the great beer his band of pirates drinks has lived to tell about it. Until now. Made with a bombardment of hops to defeat your tastebuds in battle and all the black malt you can stand before walking the plank, this Black I.P.A. will make it worth going down with the ship.

Pours dark brown with a light brown head. Smells of resiny hops, roasty, spicy. Tastes of pepper, bitter, roasty, some coffee, chocolate on the finish.

on draft at cap ale DT. black pour with a beige head going toward brown. roasty malt nose balanced with piney hops with a bit of a pineapple thing happening too. similar flavor profile: roast first, hops very strong but coming in second to the malts. this black IPA definitely tends toward the interpretation of the style that accentuates the roasted malts rather than just using them/it just for coloring, which I dig, but if thatís not what youíre expecting, be prepared.

Dark brown, almost black pour with a small, off-white head. The aroma is apples, grapefruit and slight roastiness. The flavor has lots of grapefruit with notes of pine, evergreen, caramel and a sweetish roasted malt backbone. Creamy, medium body with lots of carbonation.

22oz bottle from MrFacto, thanks Matt. Rating #118. Pitch black pour with a dark fluffy light brown head. Citrusy hop aroma, light roast, pretty nice. Light bitterness with a secondary lingering bite on the back of the tongue and a little more roast in the finish. (1312)

Bomber. Poured deep brown with a stately cap of beige head. The aroma picked up toasted caramel and molasses upfront with fresh pine resin, sparkly citrus, and a hint of ashy smoke around.. spicy overall and well-presented. The flavor found a hefty dose of burnt black malt throughout, some giving off coffee and molasses character.. bitterness was bright and mostly piney.. finished with tacky black malts, a touch of smoke, and residual pine bitterness. Medium-bodied and scratchy across the palate.. a little sharp at times.. overall well-balanced with a tad too much burnt character.

Terrapin is really rocking it with their beers. Anyway medium bodied beer with little head on the initial pour. I smell malts and very bitter hops. Interesting nose. I can taste chocolate, hops, malts, coffee and malts as well. Very nice beer.

This beer pours as black as an imperial stout. Smells like one too. However it taste like one might expect with a roasted hop flavor that finishes clean and smooth. Awesome

22 oz bomber. Pours a dark cola brown color topped by a small, pillowy head of tan colored foam. Some small sudsy lines of lace coat the glass. The aroma shows notes of sharp pine resin and grapefruit hop bitterness up front while dry cocoa and bitter black malt provide the base and compliments the hops nicely. The flavor follows these same lines with the sharp citrus, grapefruit, and pine hops adding ample bitterness to go with the dark cocoa and bitter black malts in the base. The black malt adds an earthy character with the cocoa adds a touch of roast to balance things out. Medium bodied in the mouthfeel with balanced carbonation that leaves a semi-dry feeling on the palate. The hop bitterness lingers on the finish. This is a solid black ipa, and one of my favorites from this series by Terrapin.

Bomber pours a dark mahogany body with a three finger head that retains well and leaves abundant sticky lacing. Aroma is milk chocolate, grapefruit hops, and a hint of dark roasty coffee. Full medium body has a creamy carbonation. Taste has earthy and pinky grapefruity hops with lots of milk chocolate notes. Just a hint of roasty coffee. Finishes with a slight earthiness and a dry roasty maltiness, but still more like a hoppy porter than a black IPA.

Draft at Lizzy McCormackís. Pours a dark, translucent cola to mahogany color with a frothy, whipped head of khaki tinted foam. Patchy, ribbony swaths of lacing circle the glass. The nose is boldly hopped, featuring sharp, dry grapefruit and pine notes prominently. Soft, dry cocoa and black patent malts provide a smooth, unobtrusive, solid backdrop that complements the resinous hops nicely. Flavors follow suit, falling well on the hoppy side of balanced, again flush with bold citrus, grapefruit, orange, and pine resin bitterness. Dark, cocoa driven malts are simple but effective, bringing a hint of softly sweet earthiness and roast to the table. Medium-plus in body stature, the palate sports balanced carbonation and a slightly chalky, semi-dry feel. Overall, itís a pretty damn solid example of a dark IPA. Good stuff.
