COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Legend had is Captín Krunkles is the most feared pirate on the high seas. No one has seen him, his ship, or the great beer his band of pirates drinks has lived to tell about it. Until now. Made with a bombardment of hops to defeat your tastebuds in battle and all the black malt you can stand before walking the plank, this Black I.P.A. will make it worth going down with the ship.

Reviewed 9-13-10. A couple of BA traders have asked me about this beer when I told them I could get Terrapin. I bought one for someone, and then picked one up for myself to see what all the Hooplah was about: Ap: Pours black as night, with a 1/2 inch head that left instantly, and carbonation to spare. Ar: Not really strong in the aroma department, but what Iím getting reminds me of Coca-Cola - slightly bitter, with a hop sizzle. T: Not at all vicious, actually very malty, and much smoother than I expected. P: Frothy lacing and very creamy in texture. Very soothing. O: Nothing really special about this one, but the beer itself is not too pretentious. Also, I REALLY love the bottle art!

Pour is a mahogany color with a medium tan head. Aroma is hops, malts with a earth/ floral presence. A nice combination of floral hop flavors and rich malt back ground.

Bottle. Black with thick tan head. Aroma is roasty and nutty malt with piney hops. Taste follows but adds a bit of chocolate up front and citrus in the finish. Thin mouthfeel prickly mouthfeel and medium finish. Good.

more subdued and less fresh hop aroma and flavor than i was hoping for, though still nice, and better than average...but far from elite. Had it side by side with Hop in the Dark and Sublimely Self Righteous and it got itís southern ass thoroughly kicked. More complex and less roasted malt tones than usually found in a black ipa. Again, nice, but the bitter hops needed to be more aromatic and assertive."

Bottle. This is a nice dark black IPA with more roasting than most others i have tried. Well done.

12 oz bottle of Captín Krunkles Black IPA poured black and opaque with a good size, durable tan head that left splotchy lacing. Aroma; pronounced hops with faint malts. Nonetheless, appealing. Flavor: more balanced. Unlike many black IPA;s, IMO, this one successfully integrates the substantial hop load with a substantial amount of medium and dark malts. Its success is due, I suspect, to not going overboard with the ingrediants. Terrapin has also done a fine job of matching the malts to the hops.

Bottle best enjoyed by 1 (Month) 2 (Week) 15 (Year). Nose with lightly astringent scorched and burned black malt, pine and spice form the hops, lighter citrus and faint rind, mostly about the roast, though. Pours very dark brown with a dense tan head. Taste is dry with stouty black malt, medium bitterness but itís smooth and integrated, very little prickle or sting anywhere here, even the carbonation is soft. Head develops into a more Belgian fluffer over time, which does seem to match the malt bill better. Fullish body, and surprisingly drinkable. Alc is hidden, clean throughout, and a pretty decent balance between two somewhat disparate elements (itís reasonably close to halfway between). Smooth and souflul!

From a bottle from lazy dog. Pours dark brown with copper undertones. Tastes like bitter roasted malt, bitter hops, burnt toast, and light citrus. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like sweet malt, toast, and light citrus hops.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with creamy beige head. Aroma is roasted and chocolate malts, faint ash, light raisins, and some earthiness. Flavor is dry roast malts forward with medium earthy and chocolate bitterness, and some faint dark fruit notes; dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.

Fresh bottle from jbruner. Pours midnight black with little to no head. Aroma is símores, a bit of chocolate, fir tree, pine cone. Taste is sweet, light/medium body with decent amount of combination. Interesting play between the dark, roasty/chocolatey malt and hops (what style?). Not bad.
