3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
A couple of BA traders have asked me about this beer when I told them I could get Terrapin. I bought one for someone, and then picked one up for myself to see what all the Hooplah was about:
Ap: Pours black as night, with a 1/2 inch head that left instantly, and carbonation to spare.
Ar: Not really strong in the aroma department, but what Iím getting reminds me of Coca-Cola - slightly bitter, with a hop sizzle.
T: Not at all vicious, actually very malty, and much smoother than I expected.
P: Frothy lacing and very creamy in texture. Very soothing.
O: Nothing really special about this one, but the beer itself is not too pretentious. Also, I REALLY love the bottle art!

About average for this style. Black IPAs are hit or miss for me, so this falls near the border. Decent amount of hops, though I prefer more of a malt balance. Aroma has some mild citrus and pine, but overpowered by some kind of musty smell. Glad I tried this in the winter mix-pack bundle, but wouldnít really want to sample this in a bomber or growler.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured from a 12 oz bottle. Appearance is black, opaque, and khaki head. Aroma is floral, piney, and citrus hops. Taste is same, but with caramel malt flavor. Palate is medium to full. I don't love this style as much as others do, but still decent.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours thick dark black unclear with a creamy beige head. Aroma brings fresh piney hops so nice in the nose. Flavor brings roasted malts and piney hops blended on the palate smoothly and rich.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
12 oz bottle from Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh. Really warms the bones and has enough exotic stuff in it to keep you guessing for a long time. Explore it if you get a chance.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours black with a small, dense head. Pretty typical for a black IPA--lots of citrus hops on the nose and taste with a decent malt backbone. Good dry finish. Not an outstanding black IPA, but one of the better 12 pack beers Iíve had.

3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
This black IPA has a bitter coffee taste and a long finish as the hops dominate. Overall, it is a good IPA but not one that I will go out of my way to get.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12oz bottle via variety pack. Pours black with a finger of creamy tan head. Aroma is a little odd. Notes of milk chocolate, over ripened grapefruit, and orange juice from concentrate. Taste is better then the aroma. Notes of dark malt and dark chocolate up front, followed by a big hit of bitter orange and pine, and finishes with roasted malts and caramel.

3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Deep dark brown coloured body with a very soapy, large, four centimetre tall light brown head. Aroma of fresh citrus and piney hops with a good deal of roasted malt, coffee and a bit of alcohol - nice and fragrant, mostly from the hops. Medium-bodied; Assertive grassy and citrus-based hops with a good and relatively smooth roasted malt backbone and a bit of earth coming through near the finish. Aftertaste is very one-dimensional with the hops battling through the roasted malt, but since this is more hop-heavy, the balance is a bit off. Overall, a decent Black IPA, not stellar, but showing more hops than malt and seems a tad watery near the finish. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Washington (Foggy Bottom - I Street), DC on 16-October-2014 for US$2,49 sampled at home in Washington on 11-November-2014.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Pours clear reddish black, medium tan head, good lacing. Aroma is roasty, chocolate, light pine. Flavor is medium sweet, roasty, chocolate, some pine and citrus, but more of a stout than an IPA on the nose and mouth. Light-medium body overall. A bit of an anachronism for me.
