COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Terrapin Side Project 12 is none other than the fearless Hopzilla Double IPA. This hoptastic creature clocks in at 110 IBUs and has all the hop explosions of a B-rate monster movie.
Made with 100% Maris Otter malt to back up the barrage of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma, this beast knows no boundaries. With all of this hoppy goodness packed into one beer, we wouldn’t have called it by any other name.

Bottle 2012. Appearance: slightly hazy golden color, white frothy head dissipating very quickly and some alcohol legs. Aroma: very bready slightly caramel malt forward with clear citrus and maybe hints of pine and alcohol; picking up a strange marker (like a Sharpie) kind of smell that I can’t put my finger on (maybe the alcohol mixing with the citrus and breadiness coming together strangely). Taste: very floral and citrus at the front and throughout leading into that strong malt backbone that gets sweeter from the alcohol all the way through the end and aftertaste; mild hop bitterness towards the end and lingering but not enough to really balance that sweetness. Mouthfeel: thin to medium body, medium carbonation. Overall: it’s a decent showing but just a little too sweet for me. Wishing the hops made a stronger presence to balance that strong malt coming through. I wouldn’t turn it away but most likely won’t seek it out again.

2012 Bottle. Light yellow color with a white head. Smell is pretty hoppy, full of citrus and grapefruit. Taste similar, pretty high alcohol presence known here. Grassy, citrus flavor. Pretty good, but not worth the sticker.

Poured into a Duvel tulip glass from a 12 ounce bottle vintage 2012.

A: Murky amber body with a very thin white head, poor retention.

S: Heavy semi-sweet citrus of tangerines, grapefruit, and oranges. Too much citrus for me.

T: Sweet thick and malty up-front into sweet citrus which progresses to bitter until the finish. Too heavy on citrus for me and too thick for my liking.

M: Thick with soft carbonation.

O: This is too expensive to bother with this unbalanced, borderline, mess. It was hard to get through a 12 ounce bottle.

rbrazell (1702) - Florida, USA - MAR 28, 2012
Pours a medium gold with a frothy white head. Aroma of strong orange peels, light mint, pine, and dank hops. Sticky and somewhat thick mouthfeel with bitter citrus and pine. Some alcohol notes come through but it’s a pretty solid beer.

Rosehip and cat urine aroma. Orange also present. Cloudy amber, medium head. Candied overripe orange flavor with pine accents. Distinct orange peel finish. Full body, alcohol tasteful.

Very tasty indeed. The beer pours a hazy light amber with a small white head. In my humble opinion, just the right of carbonation for the style. Bread and sweet malt come up front in the aroma followed by some pine and citrus. the taste is similar with a hint of pepper at the end along with a bit of booze. The finish is dry with a long lasting after taste.

3/23/12. On tap. Very slightly hazed copper pour with a small khaki head. Fruity, tropical aroma, definitely hoppy with touches of sweet caramel. Nice tropical flavor as well, peachy and pineapple, with touches of malt in there. Not too bad!

Served on-tap at Al’s of Hampden. Another hoppy beer from Terrapin eh, lets see how this one turns out... A - Pours slightly hazy golden orange with a nice one finger tall white head leaving small wisps of lace down parts of the glass. S - Smells of tropical fruits - mostly grapefruit - and some pine resin. Also hints of caramel malt and some booze once the hops die down a bit. T - Starts off with some dulled citric hop bitterness quickly giving way to a mix of sweet caramel malt, dulled tropical fruit rind and some booze, which only grows stronger as it sits in the glass. Finish is a mix of sweetness, hop bitterness and booze burn, lingering on the pallet for quite some time after consumption. M - Medium body and flavor with moderate carbonation. The hops are fading and the malt is growing but all things considered a pretty decent feel. O - Not too bad really. The smell was really nice but the taste was going a little stale. Worth the shot for sure.

Pours deep golden color. Moderate head that dissipates quickly. Huge hop aroma. Very fruity: pineapple, mango, peach. Also getting some piney notes too. Taste is super malty. Too malty I think. Id prefer it a little drier. Bitterness is intense at 110 IBUs but the maltiness is even more so. Definitely some alcohol in here too. Very hot. Too unbalanced for my tastes.

120z bottle from Spirits Lacey. Pours out a well carbonated, mostly clear golden color with a small, very small at that white head. Aroma is of cat piss hops, pine sap, resin, and some sticky sweet malty notes. Taste is a smack of oily, citrus, resin-filled hops, acidic citrus fruit, sweet sticky malt backbone creeps in there and for a second borders on cloying, but the hops rescue your palate from that and finish with a nice punch of bitterness. Finish has some tell of the alcohol, and a good does of bitterness. Pretty tasty.
