Terrapin Side Project 12 is none other than the fearless Hopzilla Double IPA. This hoptastic creature clocks in at 110 IBUs and has all the hop explosions of a B-rate monster movie.
Made with 100% Maris Otter malt to back up the barrage of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma, this beast knows no boundaries. With all of this hoppy goodness packed into one beer, we wouldn’t have called it by any other name.

Yellowish orange pour. White head. Sweet and juicy citrus hops and syrupy sweet malts. Awesome sweet and hoppy flavor. Delicious!

Lots of tropical fruit on the nose, grapefruit, oranges, apricots, peaches, some malt sweetness balances. Some alcohol on the nose but really a nice fruity take on the aroma. Pours golden, nice lasting head and lace. The flavor is again very tropical with citrus, apricot, oranges, some floral notes here and there, a somewhat basic malt base flavor. Really well balanced flavor/hop/malt wise. My only complaint is that it might be a little hot, but still very well done and enjoyable.

Bomber. Glowing gold, cloudy, with fine lace. Big grapefruit aroma, tropical fruits, tangy alcohol. Big alcohol bite in the mouth, lots of bitterness, citrus hops. Big, boozy, burn! Very stimulating but unrefined. Could use some age. Honey sweetness resides at the back of huge alcohol and strong hop bitterness. A mess.

THOUGHTS: Very light coloration for a DIPA. Hid alcohol incredibly well. Tons of hop flavors and aromas, but not a ton of bitterness, because it had a tons of malt to balance things out TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a very light orange or a very dark yellow that almost glowed. Just looking at it mad me want to drink it. It also had a small to average, ever so slightly off-white head that mostly diminished and left fair lacing. The aroma had moderate light malts; heavy pine and grapefruit and resin hops and a hint of Band-aid. The initial flavor was heavily sweet and rather bitter; while the finish was heavily to nearly harshly sweet and heavily bitter with a little bit of a long duration. There was grapefruit, pine and other citrus hops, light malt, hints of honey, candy sugar and maybe just a little caramel. The medium to full body was a little syrupy and then oily with very fizzy carbonation and a light to moderately alcoholic finish.

Hazy medium yellow with a thin oily head. Fresh citrus hop aroma blended with juicy malts. Not overly bitter in the flavor nor overly sweet. Good balanced IIPA. Big and full with low carbonation.

Bottle. Pours a golden body with a white head. Big hoppy body, fresh grapefruit rinds, light pineapple sweetness, hint of citrus and piney notes. Very fruity with a mild sweetness amongst a huge hoppy body. Huge citrus tones and a sweet warming. Nice offering.

A long-awaited tick upload from GABF 2010. Pours a hazy golden color with a one-finger white head and decent lacing. Nice hop aroma, with a big complex hop profile that is herbal, floral, and citrusy, along with sweet malt. The flavor though is a slight letdown. Rather sweet and malty with a big hop profile of citrusy and floral hops. Not toobalanced. Decent palate, medium-full bodied with slight syrupiness and some resins. Overall this is not a reasonable but not as good as expected DIPA.

Bomber from the Carrboro Bottle Shop. Faintly hazy pour, deep orange with a pretty decent amount of carbonation. The nose immediately signals excessive sweetness, nothing that would want to level Tokyo at all. Creamy mouthfeel, and the flavor has some smooth, bready malts in there that somehow only accentuate how one-dimensional this brew is. In a certain sense, it reminds me of that overly sweet Anderson Valley DIPA, but a notch or two above. Needs more depth of flavor, and a thicker body couldn’t hurt either.

Bomber. Pours golden with a medium white head. Aroma and flavor are dominated by grapefruity, piney hops. Alcohol is pretty hot. Palate is sticky and viscous. So so DIPA.
