COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Terrapin Side Project 12 is none other than the fearless Hopzilla Double IPA. This hoptastic creature clocks in at 110 IBUs and has all the hop explosions of a B-rate monster movie.
Made with 100% Maris Otter malt to back up the barrage of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma, this beast knows no boundaries. With all of this hoppy goodness packed into one beer, we wouldn’t have called it by any other name.

Had this in a bottle. Pours to a solid gold bottle with a citrusy aroma to it with a medium body. Not much carbonation with a small head o it. The only downside for me I was expecting this to be a bit hoppier, though it has a nice grapefruit taste to it

Reviewed from notes. Rcvd in trade. This was poured into a snifter and a tulip. The appearance was a nice looking hazy pale orange color with some light brown tinges running lightly around the sides of the glass. The head was about a light one fingered white foaminess sticking for a good minute before it died in a lumpy sort of way. There’s a good amount of lacing clinging all over the place (nice show!). The smell had a bitter/dank/citrusy and somewhat resinous grapefruitiness running all over my nose and pummeling it into submission as to confusing it with bitter hops. The taste had a nice citrusy sweetness running over my tastebuds. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a sessionability closing in on perhaps one or two beers of this in a night. Overall, my final assessment on this one, well, its a great DIPA. I liked this one a lot and at the moment think its Terrapin’s best one (makes me wanna move to GA).

This is one of those IIPAs that is really more of a hoppy barleywine. I like hoppy barleywines but if you are looking for something dry, you might steer clear of this. It pours a nice orangle color and is slightly cloudy w/ just a long-lasting soap bubble head. There is pineapple and melon in the nose. A great deal of sweetness brings out some citrus notes which then brings to mind orange liqueur. This is definitely a bit sticky on the palate but there is some mild fine-bubbled carbonation which helps make it feel creamy rather than heavy. There is a good bit of bitterness in the finish but it still comes off as mostly sweet. Definitely, this is a slow sipper and even twelve ounces of it gets to be too much. People will laught at this suggestion but I think this might be a good beer for aging. My main problem w/ it is as far as I have one is that it is simply sweet rather than having malt complexity. If some age brought out some nutty sherry-like notes it would be a real winner. As it is, it is only OK, really. It tastes good but it is too simple to be interesting enough to want to spend as much time as this takes to drink to drink it.

A new favorite. Clear, honey-colored, brief head. Might have some Citra hops (pine/cat pee - great aroma). Some sweet lemon-candy flavor to balance the hop bitterness. Wonderful, balanced - reeeeeally good!!

Pours a beautiful brick orange. Soft light emanates form the body of the beer to show off golden yellow hues and various shades of hazed orange. Fat head of khaki foam that lasted well. Nose is tangy ripe pineapple. A bit of sugary malt. Some candied orange peel. Earthy pine. A bit of bread and spice. Dank. No alcohol on this nose. Taste follows the nose all the way. It becomes complex as it warms. The fruits all have their turn on the palate. Pink grapefruit, tangy sweet pineapple, mango and orange. The booze is just a bit of warmth int he swallow. The malt comes up a bit impertinent in this one to offer some chewy bread. The bitter is deep in the beer and is part of the mouthfeel. (BRAVO) Creamy, lingering sweet finish with a surprising crispness and one last bit of bread before you are done. Outstanding!

12 oz. Lightly hazy orange-amber with a lasting disc of cream on top. Aroma is tangerine, apricot, resin, caramel, grapefruit and buttery toast. Tastes of toffee, citrus zest, mint, tangerine, booze and earthy toasted whole grain bread. Some starchy rice and pithy wood in the long finish as well. Medium-heavy body is a bit minty and boozy, but has a nice balance with a long dry finish. Soft medium carbonation.

From a 12 oz bottle shared at home. Pours a clear copper with an off white head. Resin aroma. Flavors of orange and caramel. Not too boozy for the style. Bitter finish.

12oz bottle, thanks to Homer321. Bottled labeled 10.3%. Shared with robotopera. Mostly hazy orange color. Thin off-white head. Good dots and ropes of lace. Ehhh... Really musty and metallic I think. Tastes a little oxidized to me. Definitely some bigger piney hop, some herbal character. Robby prefers this one to the STLIPA we just sampled prior. Again flavor is kind of mild on this one, he says, but it lingers a little bit better. I think there’s a distinct taste that might suggest that this may not be as fresh as it could be, but that could be in my head. Some caramel, light spicy bite to it. An uncomfortable tingle up front when sipping, initially... "Kind of like licking a 9-volt battery," as Robby puts it. Bigger body. Lighter carbonation. Lightly soft. Kind of dry finish. Overall, though, not a bad DIPA. Big piney hop, big bitterness, hides the alcohol reasonably well for 10%. Got to give it a point for that. Robby says he doesn’t get any booziness. He gave it a 4.0. This grew on me as I went. I went through it without much trouble. Robby continues, "A lot of oak on the aroma. A little bit of must, but not to the point of being offensive. Palate-wise for the aroma, it’s very well-balanced. You can do a full inhale, and there’s nothing that’s overpowering any other aspect of it." Wisdom.
