Terrapin Side Project 12 is none other than the fearless Hopzilla Double IPA. This hoptastic creature clocks in at 110 IBUs and has all the hop explosions of a B-rate monster movie.
Made with 100% Maris Otter malt to back up the barrage of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma, this beast knows no boundaries. With all of this hoppy goodness packed into one beer, we wouldn’t have called it by any other name.

Bottle. The name had so much potential, unfortunately the beer didn’t. A below average attempt at DIPA.

Pours a cloudy pale orange with about a fingers worth of white head. Strong aroma of citrus hops, grapefruit, oranges and some pineapple. Flavor is massive hops, with most pineapple and some pine and grapefruit as well. The hops are well balanced by the malt backbone. The alcohol becomes more apparent and in your face as the beer warms. A nice smooth start and middle with a bitter finish. A well rounded beer. Wish I bought more than one bottle.

UPDATED: APR 9, 2012 Pours a soft hazy yellow with one finger of frothy off white head. Nose is citrusy, with notes of pink grapefruit, orange flesh, and hints of pineapple. Interesting nose. Flavor is not as complex, spicy citrus rind hop character with some caramelly malt. Palate is a bit forward on the bitterness and seems a tad light on body.

Aroma:Sweet cotton candy and citrus (orange and grapefruit) hops in the nose. Appearance:Cloudy pale orange in color. Nice white fluffy head, good retention. Taste:Very hoppy and bitter in the foretaste. The hops are mostly just bitter grapefruit, with a little peach, and a little pine. Sweet malt backbone. Sweet nutty malt aftertaste. Palate:Medium body, hot alcohol burn, a little hop astringency. Overall:This one is another hop bomb, but the hops themselves don’t really stand out flavorwise. I do like it a lot better than some of the more pine-foward IIPAs out there. It is a little tough to get through a bottle by yourself, as this is more of a sipper IIPA.

Bomber from Whole Foods Market, Glen Allen, VA, opened 9/23/10. Pours a very hazy orange yellow color with a medium creamy white head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of citrus, earthy and tropical hops, with coconut and a hint of caramel. The taste is big hops, practically pineapple juice, along with citrus and tropical notes. Pale malts and a bit of a coconut vibe, again. Lingering bitterness. Medium-full bodied. Nice beer.

Draft at Flying Saucer Fall Beer Festival. Pours amber orange with a white head. Great wet hop aroma- floral, fruity, and sweet. Medium bodied with a nice steady carbonation. I really like the Maris Otter malt here, as it provides a great backdrop to the bold, but not aggressive juicy hop bitterness. Semi dry finish. A well constructed Double IPA with nice transititions

Bottle:   Hazy straw, a little on the dark side, huge sudsy white head, clingy lacing.   Bright pithy nose, learned that from scrizzz.   Citrus peel, white bits, and a bit of alcohol heat on the nose.   Seems to have a mild sweetness.   Hops are minor.   Semi-sweet hoppy/citrusy on the tongue.   Pretty damn tasty.   Has as bit more alcohol burn than I care for, but a little bit of time would fix that.   Moderate to full body and mouthfeel.   Very warming, not as heavy as I would have thought.   As I often say, seems like 1½ IPA.   Moderate body and mouthfeel, decent malt base but not real heavy.   Lingering bright citrusy notes, hoppy without being bitter.   Has character, hoppy, citrusy, with some alcohol flair.   Thanks to jtclockwork for the bottle!
