Terrapin Side Project 12 is none other than the fearless Hopzilla Double IPA. This hoptastic creature clocks in at 110 IBUs and has all the hop explosions of a B-rate monster movie.
Made with 100% Maris Otter malt to back up the barrage of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma, this beast knows no boundaries. With all of this hoppy goodness packed into one beer, we wouldnít have called it by any other name.

Iím trying to get back into the game hence my first rating for 2011. And here we go! Hazed light golden pour, lots of brown sediment floating in cascading waves with accompanying bubbles. Half inch white head. All poured from a 1.5 year old bomber from a not-so-recent trade: Nose of orange peel and oils, over-ripened apricot and pineapple, maybe papaya, and definitely some sugar. Flavors are near-robust, but lack that balance of hops vs. alc. that Iím yearning for. Maybe itís too much of a malt sweetness, I canít put my finger on it just yet. Well, itís an old bottle, so... Light alcohol finish, but my insides feel nice and warm. Drinkability: I expected more. Pairing: Rich mango with Thai sticky rice. Rebuy: Needs a rerate. Yes. #473 on 09092011 -DG.

From a tap at the brewery. The pour is a unfiltered orange sweet and malty double IPA . Stricky medium body.

Bottle, yup I drank it straight out of the bottle -- A very malty IPA, a strong base that just has a super thick resinous mouthfeel from all the hops used in it. Very pleasant, definitely a good sipper.

Sweetish, fruity, caramel aroma. Very foggy, orange tan brew with a thinnish ivory head. Drier than it smells, not over bitter, starchy malt flavor, some off vegetal notes. Moderately sweet, fairly acidic. Sturdy mouthfeel. On tap, Whole Foods, Tallahassee.

All the numbers on this one seem off. I'm surprised it's 10.8%, I'm surprised it's 110 IBUs, and I'm surprised it's only rated 3.7. Higher in my book. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This was awesome. Hoppy and boozy, with a punchy citrus hippy presence. Really lovely and a beer that I would love to have more often.

bottle. Just did not like this imperial IPA. Could have been a bad batch, but major alcohol present - not refined at all. Disappointing

Pretty disapointing DIPA. VERY VERY malty. The malt is definity more powerful than the hop. Not what you woudl expect for somethign called hopzilla. Not very bitter at all. Was this an old bottle? I dont think so. Thin fading head. Somewhat thick on tongue... not bad in these terms. Palate is mild... but honestly some of the other IPA from Terrapin is more of a hopzilla.

Hazy copper and bronzed coloured body with an orange glow and a thick, three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of rich dank hops with a lot of honey, malt, earth and even some perfume at the end. Full-bodied; Strong alcohol and gin notes at first with a kick of resin and pine and a lot of rich malt noticeable as well. Aftertaste has a bit of an alcohol bite at the beginning with some resin, pine, pineapple and floral hoppy notes, all with a very mild sweetness at the finish. Overall, a decent Imperial IPA that shows more alcohol notes than I expected with less sweetness, but the balance is a bit off compared to others that are better for the style. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Arlington (Clarendon), Virginia on 07-April-2014 for US$3,99 sampled at home in Washington on 20-August-2014.

Bottle. Poured a clear copper color with a medium sized white head. Aroma was pine resin notes, some citrus and floral hops, sweet caramel malts. Flavor was pretty well balanced, with some nice pine resin and sweet malt notes to balance it out. Alcohol is present, clearly. Split this bottle with a friend.

In exchange for a couple of local Ohio beers one of the gems I got was this excellent southern double IPA. Terrapin has seldom disappointed. This was no exception - a well balanced hop bomb that is everything a good release should be.

Aroma / Appearance - A carbonated base glows with a radiant orange warmth. Soft foamy head contrasts the liquid beneath. Malt driven with the scent of polished orange rinds, floral hops, and smooth textures, the bouquet may lack the aggressiveness of the hop forward West Coast examples. Nonetheless it retains its own form of freshness that invites further reflection.

Flavor / Palate - A chewy mouthfeel sticks to the corners of the palate. Hops, rosy flavors, and tangerines brighten the profile. Malty dough carries to a smooth sweet finish that has a certain booziness. Although there may be better imperial IPAs available I would still seek out new Terrapin side project releases like this as time permitted.
