4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 keanex (180) - Williamstown, New Jersey, USA - JAN 18, 2012
Poured into a Duvel tulip from a 12 ounce bottle dated Vintage 2011.
A: Clear deep amber with a thin white head that quickly turns into a thin ring around the edge.
S: This may sound odd, but it reminds me of a gummy flavored jello shot. The phenols are coming through with a slight alcohol kick, lot of sweetness as well, with cherries coming through strong. I absolutely love how this smells, it’s complex but sweet, and just smells inviting.
T: This is really interesting. There’s sweetness from the candied sugar and malts with a slight spice to it at the end with alcohol coming through, then on the other hand there’s the floral and citrus hops coming through. The blend is weird, but I absolutely love this. There’s a medicinal taste to this, reminds me of swedish fish flavored cough syrup. That can be taken terribly, but man it tastes great!
M: Full bodied, heavy with very light carbonation that has some sharpness to it.
O: I can see why people would not like this, it’s sweet as heck with a lot of going on, but I absolutely love this sweet nectar. This is something I will buy at least once a year.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 corby112 (1862) - philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 13, 2012
From notes:
Side Project #5 courtesy of khiasmus. Thanks again man!
Pours a clear, pale golden yellow color wih a thin white head that quickly fades into a thin ring. Not much in the way of lacing.
Interesting aroma with a nice balance of floral and citrus hops, light fruit, alcohol, spice and pale malt. Hints of pine needle and citrus rind along with some pepper and estery fruit notes, especially apple and pear.
Medium bodied with a crisp hop bite up front that gives off hints of pine and citrus peel. Not very dry or bitter, however, because of the estery light fruit and alcohol sweetness. Hints of zesty pepper and coriander followed by a grass/straw presence as well as some apple and pear before a boozy dry finish. Nicely balanced, flavorful and easy to drink. Not the best looking beer and could us a bit more body but it’s a pretty solid IPA/Belgian Ale hybrid.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 jeff789 (1204) - West Chester, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 9, 2012
Nearly clear golden amber with a smaller white head after a vigorous down the middle pour, mild lacing after each sip.... Big yeasty belgian aroma with a very american citrus hop presence, piney, a little orangy... Very belgian, yeasty, spicy flavor with a distinct spicy american hop... nice fusion of styles... I want a belgian IPA style as this is going to get killed vis a vis other imperial IPAs, but as a belgian ipa i rather like this.. big kinda warming body medium full bodied, spicy finish, kinda dry finish i would expect a dryer finish given the melding of the two styles...

Fresh 12oz bottle in Florida. Sure its different than your normal IPA but I have trouble saying its "Belgian." Nice sweetness in the aroma but the flavor is raw. Okay

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 KornDogg (451) - Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA - NOV 4, 2011
Bottle. Hop, alcohol and yeast aroma. Golden body with thin head, nice lacing. Flavor begins like a tripel, yeast notes, then subtle hop and pine notes. Subtle bitter finish.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Heathen (1238) - Wilmington, Delaware, USA - NOV 2, 2011
THOUGHTS: I always love Belgo-American when it works, and it works here. Both the double IPA and Tripel combine here to create something completely different, but I would have like a little more aspects of either to shine. There should really be a separate Belgo-American category. Hid alcohol well.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a fairly clear, medium orange with a small, off-white head that mostly diminished and left fair lacing. The aroma had light to moderate caramel and grain; moderate to heavy tropical fruit hops; lighter pine and citrus hops; moderate spicy yeast; apple; pear; white wine; and light alcohol. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and lightly bitter; while the finish was moderate to heavily sweet and heavily bitter with a long duration. There was caramel malt, apple, grape, lots of yeast, a little alcohol, citrus and pine hops, a little molasses, oranges, lots of very fruity struff, spicy yeast, a little dough grain, some tropical fruit, apricot. The medium body was a little oily and then a bit dry with rather fizzy carbonation and a lightly alcoholic finish.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 BiochemProf (179) - Boone, North Carolina, USA - OCT 24, 2011
golden amber pour with a thick persistent khaki head. Ester and hop aroma (juicy fruit and pine). Butterscotch flavor with alcohol hotness mixed with hoppy flavors (kind of a weird mix). Medium/full bodied (diacetyl viscosity?) medium carbonation. Interesting beer from Terrapin.
