Volume 19: Mosaic Single Hopped Rye Ale. Brewer “Spike” has an affinity towards rye malt, so this comes a no surprise. Freshly harvested from Hop Breeding Company, LLC in Yakima Valley, the hops used in Side Project 19 “Mosaic” came freshly picked from the fields of Perrault Farms, to our brewery, and into your glass. Known as hop HBC 369 before official naming in 2011, Mosaic is the daughter of Simcoe (YCR 14) and a Nugget-derived male. To get the best of all worlds from this new Humulus lupus, we used 100% Mosaic throughout the brewing process to utilize all the flavor and aroma that this world-class hop has to offer.

Poured from a 12oz bottle I got in a trade, thanks Devin! Aroma is pine, huge rye, and caramel. Flavors are pine, little bit of citrus, lots of rye, and caramel. I like this beer but the rye really drowns out the mosaic hops.

Tap at Mellow Mushroom Franklin; reddish brown in color with a piney nose. Great lacing. Somewhat dry and tasty. A little light but definitely above average. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Red/amber pour with an off white head. Hoppy aromas of pine and earthy tones. Flavor is full on spicy rye with plenty of hops in the background. Interesting brew, intense on the palate though.

Bottle. Pours a subdued red with good lacing and minimal head. Aroma is slight mosaic hops and tons of rye malts. Why are there so many fucking rye malts? Fuck.

Pours a beautiful clear amber with a very dark ruby background. However, the final pour from the bomber is almost opaque with flocculants. Full head and lacing that has very good retention. The nose is a bit subdued, but is toffee, caramel and biscuit over slight alcohol and dark fruit notes. The body is medium and somewhat slick with a normal level of carbonation. The flavor profile is complex, balanced and laid back - it’s there, but doesn’t hit you in the face. This quite drinkable ale begins with the flavors of the nose then flows to the spice characteristics of the rye and mosaic hops. Bitterness is almost imperceptible, but of a citric nature. The finish is clean, not quite crisp, but leaves no aftertaste beyond a few seconds.

Some fruity hops but the rye grain isn’t as prevalent here as in other rye pale ales I’ve had recently. Pours cloudy maroon with good head and lacing, especially on cask. Finishes with light bitterness. Cask at Rustico.

12 oz bottle into a tulip glass. Pours a very deep red, almost a purple. Two fingers of tan foam with excellent lacing. Aroma is sticky piney hops, tropical fruit, and caramel malts. Very sweet and fruity. Taste is fruity hops, pine, and caramel. Little rye spice kick on the end. Smooth and tasty with an underlying sweetness that cuts down on the bitterness. Overall this is damn solid. Lots of pine and tropical fruit with the nice caramel maltiness of a red ale.

Poured from a bomber into a pint glass. Nice sticky head, very pretty red coloring with a steady trickle of bubbles. Aroma is dominated by hops, with an intermingling of caramel malt. Flavor is a really nice Irish red malt base with spicy rye notes. Honestly hoppy reds just don’t do it for me. Would have preferred the beer sans all the mosaic.
